2024-12-06
Emily Calandrelli's dream of going to space was a long-cherished one. After years of anticipation, on Nov. 22, this mother of two from West Virginia not only made her dream a reality but also etched her name in history as the 100th woman to travel to space with Blue Origin. Leading up to this remarkable mission, she spent just three days training to ensure safe flight, including learning how to handle emergency situations. The journey, which lasted about 11 minutes from takeoff to landing, was about more than just fulfilling her own dreams.
Showing the Possibility to Others
With over 900,000 followers on Instagram and 1.3 million on TikTok, Calandrelli understood the importance of showing other women and girls that their dreams are attainable. When deciding what to pack within her 3-lb. weight limit, she chose a flash drive filled with wishes. She asked kids and families to share their dreams via a Google Doc, and was able to bring almost 10,000 wishes to space. Along with the flash drive, she brought gold charms to give to selected girls and her dad's college ring, which held special meaning as he was the first in her family to go to college. 1: Calandrelli's early dream was to get a well-paying job. Growing up in poverty, her dad taught her the importance of financial security. She chose engineering by looking at college majors and their starting salaries. But when she got into engineering, she discovered the awe and adventure. She wanted to share this with others, especially those who might not have seen themselves in this field. 2: The night before the mission, Calandrelli was filled with adrenaline. Seeing her family and friends one last time before heading to the training facility made the moments before launch even more meaningful. She knew the risk but put on a brave face for her loved ones. The Launch Experience
When the time came for the launch, it was "picture perfect." The weather was clear, the systems worked flawlessly, and there were no holds or delays. Calandrelli felt a rumble as the engines ignited, and then saw the fire engulfing her. Inside the capsule, it was glowing orange from the flames. After about seven seconds, they lifted off, and the Earth started falling behind. The sky shifted from bright blue to light blue to black, a sight she had never seen before. 1: Entering space, Calandrelli had about four minutes of floating weightlessly. She captured this moment on video and shared it on her social media. She was filled with a mix of emotions - awe, pride, and a little fear. It was a beautiful and exciting experience but also a bit spooky. 2: Looking at the Earth from this new perspective was a surreal experience. She was in awe of the beauty and magnitude of the planet. This moment made her realize the significance of her journey and the impact it could have on others.Returning and Sharing
After the mission, Calandrelli's first thought was hugging her loved ones, especially her kids. The joy of that hug was indescribable. She then took her kids to the mockup of the simulator where they had trained and shared the experience with them. Her daughter's dream of flying to space with her was a heartwarming moment. 1: Although she has achieved her dream, Calandrelli knows her work is just beginning. She hopes to continue sharing her adventures online and through Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Rocket Day. She feels an obligation to bring this experience to as many kids as possible and show them that their dreams are within reach. 2: Calandrelli's story is an inspiration to many. It shows that with determination and hard work, one can achieve their dreams and make a difference. She is a role model for women and girls everywhere, proving that anything is possible.
