80-Year-Old Dies After 2 Days Trapped in Sleep Number Bed, Lawsuit Claims
2024-12-12
An 80-year-old woman named Rosalind Walker met a tragic end when she was found trapped in a Sleep Number bed. Her daughter filed a lawsuit on December 10, 2022, alleging that Walker became stuck in the bed on March 1, 2023, after it "lowered without warning." She remained trapped between the bed and the wall of her bedroom for two days before being freed by emergency responders. The incident led to her death on April 3, 2023.
Details of the Lawsuit
Walker had purchased the Sleep Number bed with a 25-year warranty in Brentwood, Missouri on October 19, 2014. Almost 10 years later, on March 1, 2023, she was trapped in her Godfrey, Illinois home with the bed's "adjustable foundation in a raised position." The suit stated that the bed "lowered without warning" and trapped her between the raised bed and the wall. She remained in this position for two days until March 3, 2023, when she was freed. After being taken to the hospital and then a rehabilitation center, she was brought home on hospice. The lawsuit claimed that the bed did not have adequate warning that such an incident could happen and lacked appropriate instructions or cautionary language. It also stated that the bed had a timer that caused it to decline without any physical input or warning from Walker.Consequences and Demands
The lawsuit alleged that this negligence was the proximate cause of Walker's injuries and suffering before her death. The plaintiff, Angela Moan, is seeking compensation for her mother's "predeath suffering and injuries, for the related medical bills and for the loss of her mother's society." She is asking for an "amount that is fair and reasonable and in excess of the jurisdictional amount of $25,000 and for any and all other relief this Court deems just and proper under the circumstances."A Sleep Number spokesperson said in a statement to KMOV that the company is aware of the lawsuit and understands that the incident occurred in March 2023. They were notified after the lawsuit was filed on December 10. The spokesperson added that Sleep Number stands by the design and safety of its products and is complying with any necessary inquiries or actions. Sleep Number and a lawyer for Moan did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE.
