Aubrey Bernell “B.J.” Norman Jr. left an indelible mark on Natchez. Born and raised in this charming town, he was a proud graduate of 2001 Natchez High School and held the title of Mr. Natchez High. His former wife, Ashleigh Crosby Norman, fondly recalls his deep love for his hometown and how he always shared that pride with others. Norman, who later made a name for himself in the restaurant community of Jackson, was a true celebrity chef.Early Life and Education
Born to Aubrey Bernell Norman Sr. and Shirley Bland Norman, Norman's roots in Natchez ran deep. His educational journey took him through Hinds Community College and Jackson State University, where he focused on business. This laid the foundation for his future endeavors.Restaurant Career Beginnings
After completing his studies, Norman started his career as a night auditor at the Marriott. Through this experience, he gained a comprehensive understanding of the business. He then moved on to work at the popular Steam Room Grill, where his talent and hard work were quickly recognized. The owners took a liking to him and he progressed from being a bartender and server to becoming the assistant manager. This allowed him to learn every aspect of the restaurant business, from the front of the house to the back.Opening of Downtown Cafe
In 2007, Norman married and this marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey. In 2010, he opened the Downtown Cafe, which became a significant part of his career. The restaurant thrived under his leadership and he went on to open several more establishments.Health Setback and Pivot
However, in 2021, Norman faced a health setback when he suffered a stroke. Despite the physical impairments, he remained positive and found a way to pivot. He transformed Downtown Cafe into a consulting company and used his expertise to help numerous businesses, especially small Black businesses. He was an expert in setting up payment systems and training staff. In total, he is credited with helping open 20 restaurants in Mississippi.Recognition and Legacy
Recently, Norman was named to the Top 50 under 50 of Mississippi’s Urban Elite Professionals. He was set to be presented with this honor at a gala on Jan. 25, 2025. But his life was cut short when he suffered a seizure while attending his oldest son's basketball game on Nov. 5 and passed away on Nov. 14. His family remembers him as a man who loved his children deeply and was proud of their achievements. He passed on his love for cooking to them and enjoyed watching others excel in their crafts. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.Family visitation for Norman is Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Marshall Funeral Home, 225 Pilgrim Blvd., Natchez. A Good Times and Great Memories social hour will be held on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m. at Doll Baby’s, 6 Saint Catherine St. A celebration of life is Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church with reserved seating for the Natchez High School Class of 2001. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery and a repast will follow at Pilgrim Baptist Church.
