This annual event, which features the university's choirs, percussion ensemble, and brass choir, has become a beloved fixture in the lives of many, serving as a moment of pause, reflection, and spiritual renewal.Embracing the Spirit of Advent
Through a captivating blend of music, word, and light, Augustana's Christmas Vespers will guide attendees on a journey of Advent, inviting them to embrace the spirit of anticipation and the joyous promise of the Christmas season. The program will feature a diverse repertoire, including cherished carols in sparkling new arrangements, as well as works by renowned composers such as Poulenc, Mendelssohn, and Gabrieli, alongside modern pieces by Jocelyn Hagen, Bob Chilcott, and Gerre Hancock.Connecting the Community
In addition to the in-person performances at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, Augustana is expanding the reach of its Christmas Vespers by offering a one-time livestream on its YouTube channel. This innovative approach allows the university to connect with a wider audience, ensuring that the spirit of the season can be shared and experienced by all, regardless of their physical location.A Collaborative Effort
Augustana's Christmas Vespers is the result of a collaborative effort between the School of Music and the Office of Faith & Spiritual Life, reflecting the university's commitment to integrating academic excellence with spiritual growth and community engagement. Under the direction of Dr. Russell Svenningsen, the Augustana Choir, Angelus, VikingKor, Bach Collegium, Brass Choir, and Percussion Ensemble will come together to create a powerful and uplifting musical experience.Enhancing the Experience
To further enhance the Christmas Vespers experience, Augustana has once again partnered with Thrivent, a financial services organization. Through this partnership, Thrivent will match every dollar donated to the School of Music, up to a total of $15,000, from November through December. Additionally, after each performance, attendees will be treated to holiday cookies and hot cocoa, courtesy of Thrivent, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.A Lasting Legacy
Augustana's Christmas Vespers has a rich history, dating back to its debut in 1938 when the Augustana Choir presented a service of Yuletide music to a full house in the gymnasium/chapel. Over the years, the event has evolved, but its core purpose remains the same: to usher in the Advent and Christmas celebrations on campus, providing a moment of spiritual reflection and community connection.Embracing the Tradition
As Augustana prepares to welcome the public to its 2024 Christmas Vespers, the university is excited to continue this cherished tradition, inviting all to join in the celebration of the season and the shared experience of music, word, and light. Whether attending in person or tuning in through the livestream, attendees can expect a powerful and uplifting performance that will leave a lasting impression on their hearts and minds.
