Bald Eagle Lincoln Soars as Philadelphia Eagles Mascot, Inspiring Fans and Advocacy
2025-01-29

A 27-year-old bald eagle named Lincoln has captured the hearts of football enthusiasts at Philadelphia Eagles home games. Despite residing at the American Eagle Foundation in Tennessee, this majestic bird of prey has become a beloved figure among fans in Philadelphia since being selected as the team’s mascot in 2018. Lincoln's presence during game days involves an awe-inspiring flight over the stadium during the national anthem, eliciting cheers from the crowd. Jessica Hall, the executive director of the American Eagle Foundation, emphasized that these appearances serve not only as entertainment but also as educational opportunities to highlight the ongoing need for eagle conservation.

Lincoln's journey began in 1998 when he hatched at the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, part of the American Eagle Foundation. Initially released into the wild, he struggled to hunt and had to rely on scavenging for survival. After being recaptured, Lincoln was deemed non-releasable by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and found his permanent home at the sanctuary. Prior to becoming the Philadelphia Eagles' mascot, Lincoln spent years outdoors and trained extensively for public appearances, including performances at high school football games and university stadiums.

The preparation for each game day is no small feat. Lincoln travels from Tennessee to Philadelphia in a custom van equipped with a spacious kennel, ensuring his comfort during the 13-hour journey. His handlers take regular breaks to allow him to stretch his wings, ensuring he arrives at the stadium in top condition. According to Hall, Lincoln's travel accommodations are meticulously designed to prioritize his well-being, even joking that he is more comfortable than his human companions.

Lincoln's role extends beyond the stadium, as he continues to be a symbol of wildlife preservation and education. The American Eagle Foundation hopes to further promote awareness through Lincoln's appearances, possibly including future events like the upcoming Super Bowl. With every flight, Lincoln not only thrills the crowd but also serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures.
