Blackburn College Unveils Spring 2025 Music and Theatre Season: A Celebration of Talent and Collaboration
2025-03-03

In the spring of 2025, Blackburn College’s Department of Music and Theatre is set to captivate audiences with an array of performances that highlight the exceptional abilities of its students and faculty. The season includes a variety of events such as student recitals, musical productions, and choral concerts, all open to the public. This lineup promises to be a testament to the dedication and creativity within the college community, offering something for everyone, from classical enthusiasts to lovers of contemporary music.

The season kicks off with the Studio Recital on March 9, held at Clegg Chapel in Hudson Hall. This event provides a platform for students studying voice and piano to showcase their progress and artistry. The repertoire spans various genres, including classical, show tunes, and pop, reflecting the diverse interests and talents of the performers. Accompanied by Dr. Joseph Welch, a professor of music, the voice students will present pieces that underscore their growth over the academic year.

Following the recital, the spotlight shifts to the stage with the spring musical "Once," which runs from April 4 to April 6. Directed by Visiting Professor Adam Flores and musically directed by Dr. Welch, this production tells a poignant story of love and music through the lives of two singer-songwriters who meet in Dublin. The live band, composed of student musicians, adds an authentic touch to the narrative, creating an immersive experience for the audience. Performances are scheduled for evenings and a matinee, ensuring accessibility for all.

The season culminates with a significant choral event on May 4, featuring Schubert’s Mass in G Major. Blackburn College’s three choirs—the College Choir, Conservatory Choir, and Community Choir—will unite for this performance at Bothwell Auditorium. This collaboration symbolizes the department’s renewed focus on fostering community connections. With support from the Illinois Arts Council, the Conservatory Choir was established in the fall, providing high school students from districts lacking music programs an opportunity to participate in choral activities. Meanwhile, the Community Choir, reimagined after a pandemic-induced hiatus, returns to enrich the local arts scene. During this concert, music majors will also debut their original compositions, mentored by renowned Nashville songwriter Dr. Kim McLean. These young composers have crafted works for choir and orchestra, performing as soloists—an invaluable experience in songwriting and performance.

As the spring season unfolds, Blackburn College’s commitment to nurturing artistic talent becomes evident. Through these performances, the institution not only showcases the achievements of its students but also strengthens its ties with the broader community. Each event offers a unique glimpse into the vibrant world of music and theatre, inviting audiences to witness the magic of live performances and the power of collaboration.
