The Carthage Music Club's November Gathering at the Esquire Theater

The Carthage Music Club came together on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Esquire Theater. President Jacinda Gwinn warmly greeted the members. Club accompanist Becky Gullette led the members in the powerful rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner,” followed by the recitation of the National Federation of Music Clubs Collect. Eric Lawrence presented the background of the monthly song, “Rock-a My Soul,” a traditional spiritual, and the club then sang it together. Carolyn Copeland read the monthly poem, “Music” by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Annual American Music Month Celebration
Each November, the Carthage Music Club participates in recognizing American Music Month with a special program called the Parade of American Music. Program leaders Becky Gullette and Stephen George highlighted “Folk and Folkish Music,” sharing interesting details about the songs and composers. With Stephen George playing the keyboard and Dwaine Hubbard on the guitar, members joined in a lively sing-a-long of familiar folk songs such as Texas Our Texas, Down in the Valley, Home on the Range, Bound for the Promise Land, Oh, Susanna, Little Brown Jug, Goober Peas, This Land Is Your Land, Tie a Yellow Ribbon, Let’s Get Together and I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.There were also solo performances of other songs. Chris Collins sang “Tenting Tonight,” Annissa Jackson sang “One Tin Soldier,” Tori Windham sang “Both Sides Now” and Sarah Humphries sang “Turn, Turn, Turn.”After this musical extravaganza, a short business meeting took place where future musical events were announced. The next music club meeting will be on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Central Baptist Church. Popcorn and sodas were offered as refreshments to all in attendance.The members attending were Sarah Baker, Kristy Cawthon, Chris Collins, Lucille Collins, Carolyn Copeland, Stephen George, Becky Gullette, Jacinda Gwinn, Dwaine Hubbard, Joyce Hughes, Elinor Humphreys, Sarah Humphries, Annissa Jackson, Nancy Langford, Eric Lawrence, Marcia McKillop, Elizabeth Morris, Donna Porter, Claire Windham, Tori Windham, David Yarbrough and Janette Wittmann.The Carthage Music Club expresses its gratitude to the Esquire Theater for hosting and providing refreshments for this meeting.
