Cartuna x Dweck Secures SXSW Debut Film "Dead Lover" for Distribution
2025-03-11

In a significant move at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, Cartuna and Dweck Productions have acquired the distribution rights to "Dead Lover," an innovative film that blends horror, comedy, and romance. Directed by Grace Glowicki, this Frankenstein-themed project made its Texas premiere on March 9 after debuting at Sundance earlier this year. The movie stars Glowicki alongside Ben Petrie, Leah Doz, and Lowen Morrow. The acquisition marks one of the first deals from SXSW 2025, highlighting the growing importance of independent cinema in major festivals.

The story revolves around a gravedigger played by Glowicki who embarks on a tragic love affair with her ideal match, portrayed by Petrie. When her lover drowns at sea, she resorts to advanced scientific experiments in a desperate attempt to bring him back to life. This unique narrative showcases a blend of genres, creating a fresh take on classic themes. The film is produced by Neon Heart Productions, with Glowicki, Petrie, and Yona Strauss serving as producers.

James Belfer, founder and CEO of Cartuna, expressed optimism about the current creative movement in cinema. He emphasized the need for more support for inventive filmmakers. “We are witnessing the dawn of a historic era in storytelling,” he stated. “Artists pushing boundaries require robust distribution channels now more than ever.” Cartuna has previously worked on indie hits like "Hundreds of Beavers" and was involved in Broadway’s "Oh, Mary!"

Hannah Dweck, co-founder of Dweck Productions, praised the uniqueness of "Dead Lover." She highlighted the film's imaginative and unconventional nature. “Grace and her team have created something entirely original,” she said. “We are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking project.” Dweck Productions is known for producing films such as "We’re All Going to the World’s Fair" and "Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point."

Glowicki expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Cartuna x Dweck. “We feel incredibly fortunate to work with two companies that champion independent voices in cinema,” she remarked. “Their vision aligns perfectly with ours, and we are excited to see how they will bring 'Dead Lover' to audiences worldwide.” Plans for a theatrical release are underway, though specific dates have not been announced.

This acquisition underscores the evolving landscape of independent film distribution, where innovative partnerships play a crucial role in bringing unique stories to the forefront. The collaboration between Cartuna and Dweck Productions promises to set a new standard for supporting boundary-pushing creators in the film industry.
