Two members of the cast from the third season of The White Lotus, filmed in Thailand, had an unexpected delight during their downtime. Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook visited Khao Kheow Open Zoo to meet Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus who has become an internet sensation. Videos shared on social media platforms showcased the actors' excitement as they interacted with the charming animal. During their visit, they not only marveled at Moo Deng but also participated in educational activities about these rare creatures.

During a break from filming in Si Racha, Chonburi, Thailand, Nivola and Hook ventured to the zoo specifically to encounter the famous pygmy hippo. In footage released by HBO and Max, Hook narrated the experience while riding in a golf cart with Nivola. She mentioned that Nivola was particularly thrilled about the outing. Upon reaching Moo Deng’s habitat, both actors were visibly excited as the small hippo emerged to greet them. Zookeepers informed them that Moo Deng still resides with her parents, adding another layer of charm to the visit.

Throughout their time at the zoo, Nivola and Hook engaged in interactive sessions where they learned interesting facts about pygmy hippos. They discovered that these animals are not carnivores and gained insight into the meaning behind Moo Deng's name, which translates to "bouncy pork" in Thai. Despite offering roses and inviting Moo Deng to the premiere of The White Lotus season 3, the hippo remained unresponsive. However, the visit concluded on a high note when the zoo presented the duo with matching pajamas featuring Moo Deng.
