A Celebration of Musical Diversity: The 23rd Year of Abita Springs Opry
2025-04-08

On April 19, the Abita Springs Opry is set to host an evening filled with a blend of seasoned performers and fresh talent. As the show enters its 23rd year, it continues to pay homage to the original Piney Woods Opry while embracing a wider array of musical genres. Bryan Gowland, the founder and director, highlights the region's rich musical heritage and the constant discovery of new local artists. This event not only showcases country and bluegrass but also integrates various other styles, reflecting the cultural diversity of New Orleans and its surroundings.

The evening will commence with the Bad Penny Pleasure Makers, who have earned their place as the newest house band due to their immense popularity among audiences. Matt Ball and Joy Patterson form the heart of this group, contributing both vocal harmonies and instrumental prowess. Their performances span from heartfelt duets to lively jazz tunes, captivating all in attendance.

Another highlight will be the Charles Richards Movement, named after a fictional character created by the band. Known for their evolving sound, they plan to honor the legendary John Prine through their music at this performance. This tribute promises to bring a unique dimension to the Opry stage.

Making their debut appearance is Bogue Chitto, a New Orleans-based band inspired by the Choctaw language meaning "big river." Their repertoire encompasses a wide range of American music traditions, celebrating the indigenous roots that influence contemporary sounds.

Closing the show will be Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes and the Louisiana Sunspots. A former professional football player turned musician, Barnes brings his eclectic background to the Opry stage. His set will feature zydeco, blues, and songs sung in Louisiana French, offering a vibrant conclusion to the night's festivities.

This spring edition of the Abita Springs Opry promises a memorable experience for all attendees. Starting at 7 p.m., the event encapsulates the essence of regional music, blending tradition with innovation and welcoming diverse influences to create a truly unique celebration of sound.
