An annual tradition is set to captivate audiences once again as the Abita Springs Busker Festival resumes on March 30. This laid-back gathering, first envisioned by local artist Kimberly Berkely over a decade ago, continues to bring families and music enthusiasts together in an atmosphere steeped in Louisiana's rich cultural heritage. Starting at 11 am, the festival transforms the Abita Springs Trailhead Museum and its grounds into a vibrant stage for eight hours of live performances, where visitors can immerse themselves in the soulful rhythms of regional musicians.

The origins of this festival trace back to the Abita Springs Opry, with which it shares some overlapping talent. Inspired by the idea of providing street performers, or "buskers," with a dedicated platform, Bryan Gowland, the Opry’s producer and president, conceived the concept of expanding their audience beyond the usual city crowds. Initially integrated into smaller Opry events held at the town’s trailhead, this initiative eventually blossomed into a standalone celebration exclusively highlighting traditional street entertainment. As Gowland emphasizes, the festival aims to spotlight the remarkable musicians who enrich New Orleans' streets daily, ensuring their artistry reaches wider and more diverse audiences.

This year’s lineup features six bands, each deeply connected to the busking tradition, either through their beginnings or ongoing involvement. From jazz-infused brass band sounds to swamp pop melodies and rhythm-and-blues beats, the day promises a diverse auditory journey. However, while the name suggests openness, organizers clarify that unsolicited performances are not permitted; aspiring participants must reach out to Gowland directly to explore opportunities for future festivals.
