The Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYS), often regarded as Central New York's version of the Grammys, recently concluded its prestigious ceremony. Held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the Palace Theatre in Eastwood, the event celebrated local talent across 13 recording categories. The evening was filled with live performances and accolades for outstanding musicians, including inductions into the Hall of Fame and People’s Choice awards. Notably, Mira Grimm won the Brian Bourke award for Best New Artist, highlighting the vibrant and welcoming music community in Central New York.
The SAMMYS not only recognize musical achievements but also foster a sense of camaraderie among artists. This year’s event showcased an impressive array of genres, from pop to blues, and honored both established and emerging talents. Live performances by acts such as Tyjhier, A Kid Called Danger, and The Action! added vibrancy to the occasion. Additionally, the ceremony acknowledged Alecstar, Ron Keck, Shifty’s, Wilkesbury Brigade, Holly McCoy, and Matt Forger for their contributions to the local music scene. With over 270 recordings submitted by 182 artists, the competition was fierce, yet the spirit of collaboration remained strong.
Mira Grimm, who received the Brian Bourke award for Best New Artist, expressed her gratitude for the supportive environment in Central New York. "The music scene here is incredibly welcoming and kind," she remarked. The prize includes six hours of recording time from SubCat Studios, offering Grimm a valuable opportunity to further develop her craft. Other notable winners included Jess Novak for Best Pop, The Ripcords for Best Americana, Jon Rogalia for Best Country, Root Shock for Best Jam Band, Backyard Wrestling for Best Rock, Karim Lesgooya for Best Hip-Hop, FB for Best R&B, Paper Rabbit for Best Alternative, and the CNY Jazz Orchestra for Best Jazz. Nate Gross secured his second consecutive win in the Best Blues category.
Beyond the main categories, special awards were presented to commend exceptional contributions. The Community Spirit Award went to the 315 Thursdays Crew, while Mike Kohli received the Jack O Bocchino Spirit of the SAMMYS Award. The People’s Choice awards highlighted favorites such as Brass Inc for Local Artist or Band, Oswego Harborfest for Local Event or Music Series, Camden High School Band for Local Academic or Musical Organization, and Good Life Tavern for Local Venue. These accolades underscore the diverse and thriving music ecosystem in Central New York.
