Uncover the Lost Sounds of 16th Century Christmas Music

Finding the Hidden Treasures

Popular Christmas music from centuries ago had been dormant for hundreds of years until this discovery. Feller-Simmons, a language expert, recognized the significance of the sheet music and worked with his colleagues to bring it back to life. It's an exciting opportunity to be the first to breathe new life into these forgotten melodies. The fact that most of the vocals are in Spanish and reference the nativity adds to the uniqueness of this musical find. It's a journey through time and culture.

Bringing the Music to Life

The Newberry Consort is performing the music in concerts this weekend, marking the first time many of these pieces have been heard in centuries. Artistic Director Liza Malamut emphasizes the excitement of this moment, stating that it's a chance to experience a pilgrimage through different regions and time periods. Each concert includes an hour-long lecture before the music begins, providing context and depth to the performance. Feller-Simmons believes that the music is just as relevant to the spirit of Christmas now as it was when it was written. He hopes that others, especially in the Latino culture from which it originates, will play this music.

Spreading the Musical Message

The group plans to play five pieces from the Guatemalan Collection in concert, sharing these precious musical treasures with audiences. The performances will take place in Buena Park, Evanston, and Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, reaching a wide range of people. This musical journey is not just about hearing the music but also about understanding its historical and cultural significance. It's a reminder of our musical heritage and the power of music to connect us across time and space.More information about tickets can be found here, allowing music lovers to embark on this unique musical adventure.Copyright © 2024 WLS-TV.
