When Montclair State University made updates to its women's basketball roster this year, it wasn't just about adding new players. A new and delightful addition came in the form of a furry friend - Charley, the 2-year-old golden retriever of coaching assistant Courtney Cunningham. Charley has officially taken on the role of "director of pawsitivity" and has become an integral part of the team.

How Charley Joined the Team

For the past two years, Charley has been a regular presence around the team. Her boundless joy and friendly nature were quickly noticed. Head Coach Karin Harvey saw the positive impact she was having and decided to make her an official member of the staff. Charley now comes to practice a couple of times a week, participating in sprints with the girls, stretching with them, and lifting their spirits. She truly is a source of happiness on the court.

Charley's presence has had a profound effect on the team. As Red Hawks guard Amanda Castro explains, balancing classes, schoolwork, and practice can be overwhelming. But seeing Charley, even for a few minutes, instantly relaxes everyone and reminds them that it's time to have fun. She sets a lighthearted tone and helps the team understand that there's more to life than just basketball or schoolwork. Charley is a great mascot who picks the team up when they're down and motivates them to perform at their best.

Charley's First Game

When Charley joined the team for their game against the University of Valley Forge on Nov. 21, there was some nervousness about how she would behave on the sidelines. However, Charley rose to the occasion with grace. It was her first game, and she arrived at the gym early, mingled with the team, and even went over to the other bench to say hello to the opposing team. She also interacted with fans as they came in and sat in the stands, enjoying their company. Everyone was charmed by her presence.

Harvey is excited about the future of Charley and the team. They plan to continue building her social media presence through Instagram and have big plans for her. They hope to build her brand and branch out, perhaps doing some charity work with her. They are looking to partner with a dog and animal shelter to make a positive impact together. Charley will continue to work with Montclair State University, reminding the team and everyone else to find the simple joys in life.
