The Birth of a Festive Tradition
Since the pandemic's onset, these artists have been creating unique music videos to celebrate the holidays. Glen Hoffman, a songwriter and video producer, initiated this tradition with “The Hunkerdowns,” named for the group's formation during lockdown. Initially, they sang about wearing masks to stay on Santa’s nice list. Last year, they ventured into New York City for “Salty Boots.” This year, Hoffman sought to highlight the charm of the North Fork. “I aimed to encapsulate the warmth and pride of our region during the holidays,” he explains. The video was filmed over two days in December, featuring a vintage pickup truck borrowed from North Fork Vintage Cars. The trio cruised down Oregon Road, singing while bundled up against the winter chill. Despite the cold, the experience brought them closer to the community. Regular North Fork residents joined in at various filming locations, including Greenport Harbor Brewery, The Broken Down Valise bar, North Fork Donut Company, and Southold Fish Market. Everyone embraced the project enthusiastically, making it an unforgettable event.A Community Comes Together
Filming at Greenport Harbor Brewery proved to be a highlight for Brady Rymer, one of the musicians. The group performed by the fireplace, engaging with the crowd. “By the second performance, people were clinking glasses and singing along,” Rymer recalls. Richard Vandenburgh, the brewery owner, appeared in the video alongside patrons. He praised the production for authentically representing the North Fork’s holiday ambiance. “It was incredibly festive and fun to be part of,” Vandenburgh said. The collaboration extended beyond just the trio. Local businesses and residents alike felt a sense of pride in showcasing their beloved landmarks. The song was mixed at Rymer’s home studio, ensuring every note resonated with the spirit of the season. Available on digital platforms, “Christmas Out East” invites listeners to experience the magic of Long Island’s holiday traditions through music.Capturing Iconic Moments
The video weaves together iconic moments that embody the North Fork’s holiday charm. Scenes of frosty vineyards, cozy donut shops, and bustling markets create a visual tapestry of winter festivities. Briermere Farms’ apple crumble and the Long Island Expressway’s HOV lane jokes add a touch of humor and nostalgia. These elements blend seamlessly, offering viewers a glimpse into the region’s seasonal delights.Through their music, the trio aims to foster a deeper connection between people and place. By highlighting local landmarks and traditions, they hope to inspire others to embrace the beauty of their own communities during the holidays. Each scene in the video serves as a reminder of the simple joys and shared experiences that make the season special.A Legacy of Joyful Collaboration
What began as a pandemic-era project has evolved into a cherished annual tradition. The Hunkerdowns continue to bring joy and unity to their community through creative expression. Their music videos not only entertain but also serve as a tribute to the places and people that make the North Fork unique. As they look forward to future projects, the trio remains committed to celebrating the spirit of the holidays and the bonds that connect us all.
