Embracing the Joys and Trials of Pregnancy and Postpartum

A Rollercoaster Pregnancy

Sofia Richie Grainge's journey to motherhood was not without its fair share of ups and downs. The model, who welcomed her daughter Eloise Samantha Grainge in May 2023, reveals that her pregnancy was relatively smooth until the 32-week mark. "I had a great pregnancy up until about 32 weeks," she recounts, "and I woke up one morning and I texted Dr. A and I was like, 'Hey, I woke up and I'm really tired today. My back really hurts. I feel a little crampy.'" What initially seemed like a routine pregnancy concern quickly escalated when Richie Grainge's doctor recommended she see a fetal specialist. "And she was like, 'You know what? Actually, I think you should go see the fetal specialist to monitor to make sure that everything's okay and then you'll go home. It's not a big deal,'" the model explains. "Thank God she said that, because they hooked me up to the monitor and they were like, 'You're in active labor.'"Richie Grainge found herself unexpectedly hospitalized for six days, during which time she was placed on strict bed rest. "I was begging…please, please let me go home. And Dr. A was like, 'You can go home, but you're on bed rest. We have to monitor you,'" she recalls. Despite the challenges, Richie Grainge and her husband, Elliot Grainge, welcomed their daughter at 38 weeks, with the model describing the delivery as "a fantastic" experience.

Postpartum Complications

However, the challenges did not end there for Richie Grainge. Shortly after giving birth, she developed a rare postpartum condition called preeclampsia, which caused her to swell up "like a balloon" and experience dangerously high blood pressure. "I stayed in the hospital for two days. I went home and I blew up like a balloon. Quite literally, just swelled," she shares. "I felt very ill. … [M]y blood pressure was 165 over 103. It was postpartum preeclampsia."The new mom was faced with the difficult decision to leave her newborn daughter and return to the hospital for 24 hours to receive treatment. "The hardest thing I ever had to do, I think literally was leave my daughter two days postpartum. It was horrendous. I actually hid in the closet and cried, and my poor husband was like, 'I have to get you to the hospital because Dr. A.…is saying it's just not safe. It's not safe that you're home,'" Richie Grainge recounts. The road to recovery was not an easy one, as Richie Grainge had to endure six to eight weeks of blood pressure medication, which she says "really just takes life out of you." Despite the challenges, the model remained determined to be a hands-on parent, stating, "From the second Eloise was born, I was like, 'I can't miss an awake time. I can't miss a moment. I don't want someone else taking care of my kid.'"
