Empowering Journeys: Celebrating Women's Stories Through Cinema
2025-03-05

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Screening Room in Amherst, NY, is set to host an inspiring film series titled "ROAD MOVIES: a Feminist Film Series." This event will showcase powerful narratives centered around women's experiences on March 13th and 20th. Each evening will feature double features, curated by local filmmaker Marty McGee, offering audiences a deep dive into cinematic masterpieces that highlight female resilience and independence.

The first evening kicks off with a poignant exploration of self-discovery. On March 13th at 7 PM, viewers will be transported back to 1969 with THE RAIN PEOPLE. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this film delves into the life of a young woman grappling with her identity and choices. Her impromptu journey, accompanied by unexpected encounters, unfolds as a metaphor for the search for meaning and purpose. Later that evening, at 9 PM, Ridley Scott’s THELMA & LOUISE takes the stage, presenting a tale of friendship and empowerment. The iconic climax of this film has etched itself into the annals of cinema history, symbolizing the strength and solidarity of women facing adversity.

The second evening continues the theme of personal growth and societal challenges. On March 20th at 7 PM, George Cukor’s A LIFE OF HER OWN introduces Lily Brannel James, a small-town beauty who ventures into the bustling city of New York. Her story reflects the struggles and triumphs of an independent woman navigating the complexities of love, ambition, and societal expectations. At 9 PM, Barbara Loden’s WANDA offers a raw and unflinching look at a woman adrift in a world that often sees her as disposable. Wanda’s journey, both literal and metaphorical, resonates deeply with themes of autonomy and self-worth.

Through these films, we are reminded of the enduring power of storytelling to illuminate the human experience. Each narrative underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diverse paths women take in pursuit of their dreams. These screenings not only entertain but also inspire us to reflect on the progress made and the work still ahead in fostering equality and understanding. By showcasing these stories, the Screening Room invites everyone to join in honoring the voices and journeys of remarkable women throughout history.
