Big 9 Music Festival Celebrates Nine Decades of Musical Excellence
2025-05-02

An extraordinary celebration of music and talent unfolded at Mayo High School in Rochester, Minnesota, as the prestigious Big 9 Music Festival reached its 91st milestone. This iconic event stands as the nation's longest continuously running music festival of its kind, drawing an impressive 20,000 student musicians from all twelve Big 9 schools. Participants included representatives from Rochester public high schools, alongside Albert Lea, Austin, Winona, Red Wing, and Mankato East and West High Schools, creating a vibrant tapestry of youthful talent.

The day was filled with performances by bands, orchestras, and choirs, each group showcasing their dedication and hard work. Throughout the event, students had the unique opportunity to receive guidance from esteemed guest clinicians. Among them were Dr. Colleen Chester, Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at Winona State University; Kelly DeMorett, a celebrated performer, educator, and conductor; and Dr. Erika Svanoe, a distinguished composer and conductor for wind band. Mayo Band Director Aaron Cole emphasized the festival’s enduring legacy, noting that interruptions have only occurred due to global conflicts and pandemics, underscoring its resilience and importance in nurturing musical skills across generations.

A personal highlight came from Audrey Klein, a senior at Mayo High School, who has dedicated years to music, serving as a teacher’s assistant and drum major while mastering multiple saxophones. Her reflections on the joy and fulfillment of music-making resonated with many attendees. Another standout moment featured a composition by fellow senior Jason Ding, titled “Tinker’s Toy Factory,” performed by the Mayo High School Orchestra. The grand finale concert, set for 7:30 p.m., promises to captivate audiences with performances by select ensembles directed by the guest clinicians. This festival exemplifies the transformative power of music education, fostering creativity, discipline, and community spirit among young performers. Tickets remain available for those eager to witness this celebration of artistic excellence.
