A Celebration of Women's Voices in Music: Concord Women’s Chorus Spring Concert
2025-05-01

In a vibrant celebration of women's artistic contributions, the Concord Women’s Chorus is set to present an inspiring spring concert titled “Still Heard Around the World.” This unique event will take place on May 3 at Trinity Episcopal Church and will feature a diverse array of compositions highlighting works by female composers and authors. The centerpiece of the performance includes "Grown Wild," a piece inspired by a poem written by Melissa Apperson and set to music by Melissa Dunphy. Alongside this composition, the audience will enjoy an eclectic mix of sounds from voices, piano, oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, flute, and percussion, all celebrating the 250th anniversary of the battles of Concord and Lexington.

One highlight of the program is the performance of "Concord Fragments," commissioned a decade ago and composed by Libby Larsen. This work draws inspiration from texts authored by notable figures such as Lidian Emerson, Martha Lawrence Prescott, and Melissa Apperson herself. Each movement within this piece brings to life historical letters and diary entries that reflect the spirit of New England during the mid-19th century. Another featured piece, "To Sit and Dream," showcases the talents of Auburn University professor Rosephanye Powell, who used poetry by Langston Hughes as its foundation. Meanwhile, Tara Traxler’s "Birds of Passage" interprets a classic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with contemporary flair.

A new arrangement of "Concord Hymn" concludes the musical journey. Boston-based musician Scott Nicholas was tasked with creating harmonious arrangements for the chorus while incorporating guest instrumentalists into the dynamic presentation. Jane Ring Frank, the director of the Concord Women’s Chorus, expressed her delight in working with the ensemble to breathe life into these remarkable compositions. With each rehearsal, the group aims to elevate women's voices and touch the hearts of their audience members.

The concert promises to be a memorable experience for all attendees, offering not only a glimpse into the rich tapestry of women's creativity but also celebrating the enduring legacy of Concord's history. Tickets for this event are available both online and at the door, priced reasonably to accommodate various audiences. As the sun sets over Elm Street, guests can look forward to an evening filled with melodies that resonate deeply with themes of empowerment and unity.
