Céline Dion Honors Husband René Angélil on 30th Wedding Anniversary
2024-12-18
Céline Dion, at the age of 56, is commemorating her husband René Angélil on what would have been their 30th wedding anniversary. Angélil passed away due to throat cancer on January 14, 2016, just two days before his 74th birthday. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she shared a photo from their 1994 wedding. In the image, Dion is seen in her bridal headpiece and veil, looking into Angélil's eyes and gently holding his cheeks as he holds her hips. She captioned the post, "You still fill our hearts, every day. You are everything for us. We miss you so much. Happy 30th anniversary, mon amour," signing it from herself and their three children: René-Charles, 23, and 14-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy.
First Meeting and Relationship Beginnings
They first crossed paths in 1980 when a 12-year-old Dion sang for him during an audition. From that moment on, he became her manager, and they worked together for seven years. In 1987, when Dion was 19 years old, they started dating. Initially, she kept their relationship private out of fear of public opinion. As she told PEOPLE in 1994, "I was afraid of what people would think." But eventually, she wanted to share her love with the world. She said, "When you're in love, you want to scream it to the world."They went public with their relationship after being engaged for a couple of years. In her memoir, she wrote, "When I was at the age to be able to say to people [we were together] … It was like bang! Love! Love always wins."Wedding and Lavish Celebration
On December 17, 1994, they tied the knot at Montréal's Notre-Dame Basilica. The wedding was broadcast live on television in Canada. In April 2024, she told Vogue that she wouldn't change a thing about that lavish event. She said, "This is a moment that will be with me for the rest of my life. The dress couldn't have been big enough. I could've had three times the size on my head. I could've had six different dresses that night because he [Angélil] was, and still is, such a wonderful human being. He brought [out] the best in me. He really did."Battle with Cancer and Vow Renewal
Four years after getting married, Angélil was diagnosed with throat cancer. In 2000, the couple shared the news that he was declared cancer-free. That same year, they celebrated with a vow renewal in Vegas. However, his cancer returned in 2014, two years before his death.Recent Diagnoses and Memories
In December 2022, Dion publicly revealed her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis. In June, she told PEOPLE that she travels for her treatments and "always brings pictures" of Angélil. She said, "And we have pictures, of course, all over the place in the house." She also emphasized, "I'm still married to René. He's still my husband. He will always be."
