Universal Music Group Expands Global Reach with Acquisition of PIAS Group

In a strategic move to strengthen its position in the independent music landscape, Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced the completion of its acquisition of the remaining 51% stake in the PIAS Group. This acquisition follows a previous strategic alliance between the two companies, solidifying UMG's commitment to supporting the independent music community worldwide.

Unlocking New Opportunities for Independent Artists and Labels

Integrating PIAS Label Group and Integral

The acquisition encompasses two core business divisions within the PIAS Group: the label services division Integral, which provides physical and digital distribution services to independent labels, and the PIAS Label Group, home to the company's own and associated record labels, including Play It Again Sam, harmonia mundi, Demain, Spinefarm, Source, and partner labels such as ATO, Heavenly, Mute, and Transgressive. With this integration, Integral will merge with UMG's Virgin Music Group, while the PIAS Label Group will continue to operate as a separate and autonomous division, becoming a client of the Virgin Music Group/Integral entity.

Retaining PIAS Leadership and Culture

As part of the acquisition, PIAS co-founders Kenny Gates and Michel Lambot have signed new agreements to ensure the continuity of the company's leadership and culture. Gates will remain as the CEO of the PIAS Label Group and will also join the board of Virgin Music Group, while Lambot will transition to an advisory role, continuing to provide his expertise and insights to the combined entity.

Strengthening UMG's Global Footprint and Independent Music Ecosystem

The acquisition of PIAS aligns with UMG's strategic vision to expand its global reach and support the independent music community. With PIAS's extensive network of 16 offices around the world and a team of 300 employees, UMG will be able to leverage the company's expertise and infrastructure to better serve independent artists and labels globally. This move also reinforces UMG's commitment to its best-in-class label services operations, enhancing its ability to support the independent music ecosystem.

Fostering Collaboration and Shared Values

The acquisition of PIAS is the result of a successful strategic alliance between the two companies, which began in 2021. Both Gates and Lambot have expressed their satisfaction with the partnership, highlighting the alignment of cultures and the mutual benefits that have emerged from the collaboration. The new phase of the relationship promises to be an exciting era for PIAS, its staff, partners, and the artists it represents, as they work even more closely with UMG's entrepreneurial and creative culture.

Unlocking Global Opportunities for Independent Music

The completion of the PIAS acquisition comes at a time when UMG's global prospects are on the rise, particularly in Europe, where Spotify's net subscriber additions have been leading the way. With the regulatory restrictions on UMG's acquisitions within the EU now lifted, the company is well-positioned to explore further opportunities to support and empower the independent music community on a global scale.
