The 42nd edition of the Insect Fear Film Festival, a beloved February tradition, returns to the University of Illinois Foellinger Auditorium on February 22. Hosted by the Entomology Graduate Students Association and the UIUC Department of Entomology, this year's event highlights tarantulas and other arthropods through an engaging lineup of films, exhibits, and activities. The festival not only entertains but also educates attendees about these often misunderstood creatures. The main attraction, "Arachnophobia," features tarantulas in a thrilling narrative with high production values, despite some biological inaccuracies. Special guests include entomologist Steven Kutcher and Professor May Berenbaum, who will provide insights into the world of arachnids and film-making.
The evening kicks off at 5 p.m. with doors opening, followed by announcements of art contest winners at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., film introductions begin, leading into Steve Kutcher’s insect showcase from 7:15 to 8:05 p.m. An engaging Q&A session follows, before a short break at 8:20 p.m. The night continues with an introduction to "Arachnophobia" at 8:30 p.m., screening at 8:45 p.m.
This carefully curated schedule ensures that attendees experience a mix of educational content and entertainment. Starting with the opening remarks and moving through various segments, each part of the evening is designed to captivate and inform. The insect showcase offers a unique look into the world of arthropods, while the Q&A provides insight into the behind-the-scenes aspects of working with these creatures in film. The break allows visitors to mingle and prepare for the main feature, which promises both thrills and education.
Beyond the films, the festival offers a variety of interactive experiences. The auditorium lobby hosts an insect petting zoo, featuring friendly tarantulas, and displays of exotic specimens viewed under a scanning electron microscope. Additionally, the annual art contest entries, created by local students, will be showcased, celebrating creativity inspired by insects.
To enhance the festive atmosphere, younger attendees can enjoy face-painting, balloon-twisting, and paper-folding activities. Ventriloquist Hannah Leskosky will entertain with her talking tarantula, adding a touch of whimsy. These activities complement the film screenings, making the festival a comprehensive exploration of arachnids. Admission remains free, ensuring everyone can participate in this enlightening and entertaining event. The combination of visual arts, hands-on experiences, and live performances creates a memorable evening for all ages.
