From Combat Medics to Medical School
Triniti Gistand’s journey began in her teens when she was inspired by combat medics' bravery. The images of medics saving lives amidst chaos resonated deeply with her. This pivotal moment set her on a path that would lead her through military service and eventually to medical school. Prior to her deployment, Gistand trained as a medic with the California Army National Guard. In 2020, during the pandemic, she was assigned to the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The experience was grueling, working 60-hour weeks under immense pressure. Yet, it was also transformative, solidifying her resolve to pursue a career in medicine.The challenges were not without their toll. Burnout loomed large, especially as she prepared for deployment. However, music became a lifeline during these trying times. Gistand found solace in vocal performances, honing her skills in high school choirs and later performing with prestigious groups like the San Jose Symphony Choir. Music provided her with an escape from the rigors of medical training, allowing her to express emotions and connect with others on a deeper level.A Tent City and a New Calling
Deployed to Camp Buehring in Kuwait and Ain al-Asad base in Iraq in 2021, Gistand found herself in a tent city, initially feeling lost. But soon, she discovered her niche in pharmacy, a role that became her passion. Working alongside fellow medics, she treated soldiers for everything from minor illnesses to severe injuries. Each day brought new challenges, but it also fostered camaraderie and a shared sense of purpose. Gistand thrived in this environment, finding meaning in her work and growing more committed to her medical career.Upon returning to California in 2022, Gistand continued her military service while pursuing health sciences at Cal State East Bay. Promoted to sergeant, she balanced her studies with active duty. Her acceptance into UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine in January 2024 marked a significant milestone. Studying medicine allows her to better serve patients and address disparities in healthcare for Black people. Gistand feels a profound responsibility to improve care for marginalized communities, driven by statistics such as Black women being three times more likely to die during childbirth.Music as Therapy and Expression
Music has always been an integral part of Gistand’s life. From early choir performances to singing with symphony orchestras, she has explored various genres, including gospel, pop, musical theater, and R&B. Each performance is a chance to share her voice and connect with audiences. Music offers her a creative outlet, helping her cope with the stress of medical training. Moments of joy, whether through karaoke with colleagues or solo performances, remind her of the beauty and power of artistic expression.Gistand’s commitment to both medicine and music reflects her multifaceted personality. These pursuits complement each other, providing her with the tools to thrive in both professional and personal spheres. Her story is one of resilience, passion, and the harmonious blending of two distinct yet interconnected worlds.Toward a Future in Otolaryngology
Currently focusing on otolaryngology, Gistand faces demanding coursework but remains undeterred. Her ultimate goal is to become a physician who can relate to patients on a personal level, improving their care and addressing racial disparities in healthcare. Gistand believes that her background as a Black woman in medicine will allow her to bring unique perspectives to patient care decisions. Through her dedication and passion, she aims to make a lasting impact on the medical field, ensuring that everyone receives the quality care they deserve.
