When The Ohio State University's Community Music School (CMS) opened its doors in May, it welcomed just 15 students for private lessons in piano, voice, and percussion. But in the span of half a year, that number has quadrupled, showcasing the overwhelming demand for accessible music education in the community.

The CMS has rapidly evolved from its humble beginnings, now offering a diverse array of instruments and voice types, as well as a range of classes, including a preschool music class, a music theory class, and even a video game music class. A Harmonious Homecoming

Angela Heck Mueller, the manager of the CMS, has a wealth of experience in similar community music programs, dating back to her time working with the Athens Community School while completing her bachelor's degree at Ohio University. Her passion for music education and community engagement made her the perfect fit to oversee the launch of the CMS.

Orchestrating a Vibrant Future

Heck Mueller's role as a manager has proven to be just as fulfilling as her previous experience as an instructor. While she no longer teaches one-on-one, she finds immense satisfaction in the behind-the-scenes work that enables the CMS to reach a growing number of participants in central Ohio. The school's impact extends beyond the individual student, as Heck Mueller and her team strive to make music accessible to all.

Harmonizing Accessibility and Affordability

The CMS is committed to breaking down financial barriers to music education. Lessons are offered at affordable rates, with 30-minute sessions costing $25 and hour-long sessions priced at $50, plus administrative fees. Classes and ensembles are also reasonably priced at $20 each. Moreover, the school offers financial aid to ensure that no one is left out of the musical experience.
