But the university's rich musical heritage extends far beyond the football field, with a storied history spanning over a century and a diverse array of acclaimed ensembles that have captivated audiences around the world.Unlocking the Transformative Power of Music at NC State
A Tapestry of Musical Achievements
From the NC State Chorale's dazzling performances in historic venues across Italy to the NC State Jazz Orchestra's acclaimed showcase at the esteemed Midwest Clinic in Illinois, the university's music programs have consistently demonstrated their ability to captivate and inspire audiences. These remarkable achievements are a testament to the dedication and talent of the students and faculty who have contributed to the university's musical legacy over the past century.Celebrating a Centennial of Musical Excellence
This academic year, the Department of Performing Arts and Technology (DPAT) at NC State is celebrating a significant milestone – "100 Years of Music." The culmination of this celebration will be a February showcase that will feature the university's choir, pep band, jazz band, orchestras, and symphonic band, providing a unique opportunity to experience the breadth and depth of NC State's musical offerings.Fostering a Vibrant, Diverse Musical Community
According to DPAT department head Stuart Benkert, what sets NC State's music program apart is the way it brings together students from a wide range of majors, colleges, and disciplines, united by their shared passion for music. "These are students who are choosing to do something additional with their lives," Benkert explains. "Their careers are going to be in other areas, but art is so important to them that they are taking their time, which they don't have a lot of, to come spend that with us, to have a musical experience with colleagues, and also present that to the community."Investing in the Future of Music at NC State
As DPAT celebrates its rich history, the department is also looking towards the future, with the introduction of a new music technology major – one of only a few such programs in the country. "It's as distinct as NC State," Benkert says. "It's tech-forward, but it's artistic at the same time." This innovative degree program is a testament to the university's commitment to providing students with transformative musical experiences that prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.Honoring the Dedicated Faculty Behind the Music
Benkert is quick to praise the faculty who have been instrumental in shaping the department's success, describing them as a "better group of faculty" that he couldn't ask for. "Not only do we have students who are energetic and excited to be here, but we have the right faculty leading those students," he says. "We have the right faculty plugged in and leading those ensembles."As NC State celebrates a century of musical excellence, the future of the university's music program looks brighter than ever, with a rich legacy to build upon and a steadfast commitment to providing transformative experiences for students and the broader community.
