Jacobs School of Music Unveils Its First-Ever Fight Song at Grand Premiere
2025-02-26

At the Musical Arts Center, an audience was treated to a unique experience as they were handed not only a program but also sheet music for an unprecedented performance. The evening marked the world premiere of the Jacobs School of Music's first fight song, a project initiated by a friendly challenge between deans. This event highlighted the competitive spirit within the music community and showcased the collaborative efforts that led to this historic moment. The concert featured performances by the Symphonic Band and Concert Band, culminating in an interactive finale where attendees joined in singing the new anthem.

The journey began at a luncheon in August 2024, where Abra Bush, Dean of the Jacobs School of Music, was approached by Ash Soni, Dean of the Kelley School of Business. Soni's query about a fight song sparked an idea. Recognizing the competitive nature inherent in musicians, Bush accepted a friendly wager proposed by Soni. The challenge was set: each dean would perform their respective school’s fight song at the provost budget conference in March. Determined to meet this goal, Bush enlisted Alain Barker, director of music entrepreneurship, to organize a competition for composing the fight song. The call went out to current students, faculty, and alumni, inviting them to submit original compositions.

Ari Fisher, an alumnus who graduated with degrees in 2014 and 2018, emerged victorious from this competition. Despite a tight deadline, Fisher crafted "Sound Off the Carillon" in just four hours. His composition was performed by the Symphonic Band during the “Forward/Still” concert, which also included five other wind pieces. Prior to this, the Concert Band had already delighted the audience with three songs, one of which was Omar Thomas’s titular piece. The evening reached its climax when Fisher’s fight song was sung by master’s student Jonathan Elmore, followed by an invitation for the entire audience to join in using the provided sheet music.

Freshman Sadie Lotts, who earlier performed with the Concert Band as a trumpet player, reflected on the significance of the event. She noted how it emphasized the depth and variety of ensembles at Jacobs, showcasing the school’s dedication to music. After the concert, performers and guests mingled in the lobby, celebrating this milestone. Barker took the opportunity to ask Fisher to autograph copies of the sheet music, marking the occasion. The introduction of the Jacobs fight song represents a new chapter for the school, symbolizing unity and pride among its members.

This evening not only introduced a new tradition but also demonstrated the power of collaboration and creativity within the Jacobs School of Music. The creation of the fight song reflects the competitive yet supportive environment that thrives within the institution. As the school moves forward, this anthem will serve as a testament to the innovative spirit and rich history of the Jacobs School of Music.
