Kentucky's Iconic Music Venue Seeks New Steward Amidst Cultural Shift
2025-02-25

The historic live music venue, Headliners Music Hall in Louisville, is on the hunt for new leadership. Current co-owners Billy Hardison and Joe Argabrite are exploring options for future operators who share their passion for live performances and community engagement. Despite this transition, shows will continue as scheduled. Separately, Louisville artist Kim Perry has been chosen to design the official poster and merchandise for the 2025 Kentucky Derby Festival.

A New Chapter for a Beloved Venue

Headliners Music Hall, a cornerstone of Louisville's cultural scene for nearly three decades, is undergoing a significant change. The co-owners, who have managed the venue since 2010, are now seeking someone with a deep appreciation for live music and community involvement to take over. This transition aims to ensure the venue's legacy continues while adapting to evolving needs. The building itself, owned by Grubb Fund Management LLC, remains off the market.

Since opening its doors in 1998, Headliners Music Hall has become an integral part of the Irish Hill neighborhood. Originally constructed in 1907 as a cafeteria for a nearby distillery, the building has undergone numerous transformations. In 2010, the current owners took over operations after booking shows there for almost two decades. They continued running the venue even after selling the property to Grubb Fund Management in 2020. The Live Venue Recovery Fund, a collaborative effort between Grubb Properties and First Avenue, purchased the property to support independent venues during the pandemic. This initiative aimed to provide rent relief and renovation funds, ensuring venues like Headliners could thrive post-pandemic.

An Artist's Vision for the Kentucky Derby Festival

Louisville-based artist Kim Perry has been commissioned to create the official artwork for the 2025 Kentucky Derby Festival. Her selection marks a significant moment for local talent, highlighting the festival's commitment to supporting regional artists. Perry's work will adorn posters and merchandise, capturing the spirit of the event and celebrating the city's vibrant culture.

Perry's involvement underscores the festival's dedication to showcasing artistic excellence. As the premier event in Kentucky, the Derby Festival attracts visitors from across the globe. By commissioning a local artist, the organizers aim to foster a deeper connection between the festival and the community. Perry's artwork will not only serve as a visual representation of the event but also as a symbol of Louisville's rich artistic heritage. Her creative vision will be featured on various promotional materials, including posters, T-shirts, and other merchandise. This collaboration promises to elevate the festival's profile and celebrate the city's unique identity through art.
