New Leadership Search for Saginaw's Major Chords for Minors as CEO Prepares to Step Down
2025-03-01

The nonprofit organization Major Chords for Minors, dedicated to providing free music education and instruments to underprivileged youth in Saginaw, has embarked on a quest to find a new leader. The current chief executive officer, Lisa Purchase-Barnes, plans to retire in March. Since her appointment in September 2021, she has significantly contributed to the development of the organization during a critical phase of its evolution. This transition marks an important chapter for Major Chords for Minors, reflecting both the challenges faced and the progress achieved.

Founded in 2011 by John and Katrina Vowell, Major Chords for Minors started with humble beginnings—four keyboards, four guitars, and fewer than ten students. Over the years, the organization expanded rapidly, serving over 100 students within three years. By its tenth anniversary, it had impacted more than 1,200 students. However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to the educational landscape, including for this nonprofit. When Purchase-Barnes took the helm, the organization was at a crossroads, operating with two instructors and serving 24 students. Her leadership proved crucial in steering the organization through these turbulent times.

Purchase-Barnes not only oversaw a smooth leadership transition but also revitalized the momentum lost during the pandemic. Under her guidance, Major Chords for Minors introduced innovative programs like instrumental lessons for teenagers in foster care and "Music Mondays," an after-school initiative that partnered with the Houghton-Jones Neighborhood Association. By the time of her impending retirement, the number of instructors had increased to six, and the student body had grown to 72 participants. These achievements underscore her pivotal role in ensuring the organization's resilience and future prospects.

The impact of Purchase-Barnes' tenure cannot be overstated. She navigated the organization through complex challenges, from leadership changes to post-pandemic recovery, positioning Major Chords for Minors for continued success. As the search for her successor begins, the organization stands stronger and more prepared to fulfill its mission of empowering young musicians in Saginaw. The legacy she leaves behind sets a high standard for future leaders to uphold and build upon.
