The prestigious 2025 Regions Tradition at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham commenced on Wednesday, marking a significant week for golf enthusiasts statewide. The event's opening day featured more than just golf, as it welcomed various sports icons and celebrities to its annual Pro-Am tournament. Among those in attendance were Alabama's celebrated figures such as Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer, and Nate Oats. Auburn representatives like Charles Barkley and Bo Jackson also made appearances, along with other notable personalities from the world of entertainment and athletics. These attendees contributed not only to the excitement of the event but also to fundraising efforts for Children’s of Alabama.
As the day began, fans eagerly gathered around the first tee, their cameras ready to capture legendary moments. Nick Saban, former coach turned university advisor, drew an immense crowd when he approached the tee box shortly before nine in the morning. Accompanying him were several key members tied to the University of Alabama, including head football coach Kalen DeBoer, basketball coach Nate Oats, and former athletes AJ McCarron and Greg McElroy. Kirby Smart, once a defensive coordinator for Alabama and now Georgia's head coach, joined them on the greens.
Auburn's presence was equally prominent, with Charles Barkley and Bo Jackson representing the Tigers. Before teeing off alongside Saban, Barkley humorously engaged in a playful scuffle with Big Al, the Alabama mascot, which ended amicably with a hug. Joining them were Hugh Freeze, current Auburn football head coach, and Tommy Tuberville, a former coach who has transitioned into politics as a U.S. Senator.
Beyond the college sports legends, additional high-profile guests graced the course. These included NFL veteran Trent Dilfer, country musician Riley Green, and former American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, among others. Professional golfers used the occasion to prepare for the upcoming main competition, ensuring a blend of talent that thrilled spectators. Participants included renowned players such as Stewart Cink, John Daly, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, Steve Stricker, and David Toms.
This year's Regions Tradition is anticipated to be a memorable event for all involved, blending competitive sportsmanship with charitable intentions. As participants continue to play throughout the week, they inspire both local communities and fans worldwide, emphasizing unity through shared interests and causes.
