Errollyn Wallen, a British composer of Belizean descent, has spent decades navigating the often rigid and exclusionary world of classical music. Her remarkable career is a testament to perseverance and resilience in the face of systemic barriers. Initially, the classical music scene was dominated by male and white composers, leaving little room for diversity. However, Wallen refused to be confined by these invisible boundaries. Over time, institutions that once overlooked her contributions began to recognize her talent. "Labels are inevitable," she reflects calmly, "but holding onto your own value is what truly matters."

Wallen's musical repertoire spans an impressive array of genres and formats, from ballet scores to orchestral works. Her prolific output includes 22 operas, rivaling some of history's greatest composers. She became the first Black woman to have her music performed at the Proms in 1998, marking a significant milestone. Today, as one of the most frequently performed living composers, Wallen continues to push boundaries with numerous premieres on the horizon. Her latest album, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra, showcases her versatility and depth.

Beyond her musical achievements, Wallen remains deeply committed to social issues. Her new choral work, Reign, commissioned by the Women of the World (WOW) festival, will debut on International Women’s Day at the Royal Albert Hall. The piece, performed by a diverse group of 150 women and non-binary individuals, highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality. Wallen acknowledges the challenges women still face globally but emphasizes the importance of education and empowerment. Growing up in London, she found solace in music, particularly hymns, which became part of her cultural identity. Despite facing adversity, including racist backlash after reimagining a national anthem, Wallen remained undeterred.

Raised by her aunt and uncle after her parents moved to New York, she found early support in her uncle, who introduced her to the world of poetry and concerts.
