Unifying Communities: The Nogales International Film Festival Bridges Borders
2025-02-13

In a unique setting along the U.S.-Mexico border, the city of Nogales stands as a testament to cultural unity and artistic expression. This desert community, straddling two nations, hosts an annual film festival that brings together residents from both sides in a celebration of cinema and community. Despite the physical barrier dividing them, the people of Nogales share a deep sense of belonging and mutual respect. The upcoming Nogales International Film Festival (NOGAIFF), set for April 28 to May 4, 2025, aims to highlight this unity through innovative screenings on the border wall itself.

A Unique Celebration of Art and Community

Nestled at the southern edge of Arizona's Sun Corridor, Nogales is home to approximately 20,000 Americans, while its Mexican counterpart, Nogales, Sonora, houses over 260,000 residents. Daily gatherings at the border are common, with families meeting for hours, sharing meals, and enjoying each other's company. This tradition of togetherness inspired filmmaker Oscar Rene Coronado and coordinator Francisco Javier Landin to create NOGAIFF, formerly known as the Santa Cruz County Film Festival since 2010. The festival's signature event, "Film on the Fence," projects movies onto the border wall, allowing audiences from both countries to watch simultaneously.

The festival's origins trace back to Samuel Saunders, an art collector and former event coordinator who envisioned Nogales as a cultural hub. Over the years, NOGAIFF has grown into a platform for showcasing diverse films and fostering cross-cultural dialogue. Organizers emphasize the importance of normalizing Nogales beyond its border identity, highlighting the city's rich history and vibrant arts scene. Through free outdoor screenings, red-carpet galas, and networking events, NOGAIFF strives to entertain, educate, and inspire its audience.

Despite challenges such as equipment logistics and travel restrictions, Coronado and Landin remain committed to their mission. They have secured permits and support from both governments, emphasizing the festival's positive impact on the community. In response to recent political changes, including President Trump's executive orders affecting immigration policies, the organizers remain focused on creating a welcoming environment for artists and cinephiles alike.

Landin, who immigrated to the U.S. at age six and lived undocumented for much of his childhood, advocates for normalization and acceptance. He believes that by showcasing Nogales as a thriving cultural destination, the festival can challenge negative stereotypes and promote understanding. Coronado, a long-time resident of Arizona, echoes this sentiment, stressing the importance of supporting art and culture in the face of adversity.

Unity Beyond Borders: A Call to Action

The Nogales International Film Festival exemplifies the power of art to transcend boundaries. By bringing people together through shared experiences, it fosters a sense of community and mutual respect. As NOGAIFF continues to grow, it invites filmmakers, industry professionals, and enthusiasts to participate in this unique celebration. The festival's success hinges on the support of those who believe in its mission and vision for a more inclusive future. Through collaborative efforts, NOGAIFF hopes to transform Nogales into a beacon of creativity and unity, proving that even the most divided communities can find common ground through the universal language of film.
