Yale Graduate Finds Her True Passion in Music Leadership
2025-05-12

Nicole Lam, a recent Yale College graduate with an impressive dual major in applied mathematics and computer science, along with a joint B.S./M.S. in the latter, could have easily pursued a lucrative career in finance. However, her heart led her elsewhere. Instead of Wall Street, Lam is setting her sights on Broadway. This decision stems from her deep-rooted love for music, which she has nurtured since childhood. At Yale, she discovered a new dimension of music-making that resonated profoundly with her soul. Balancing rigorous academic pursuits with extensive musical endeavors, Lam carved out a unique path that highlights both her intellectual and artistic capabilities.

Growing up in San Gabriel, California, Nicole's connection to music began at the tender age of three when she first encountered the family piano. Over time, she developed into a skilled pianist and vocalist, planning initially to focus solely on these talents post-high school. Yet, advice from a conservatory professor steered her towards broader horizons, suggesting that understanding the world would enrich her artistry. Consequently, Nicole chose Yale to study applied mathematics, later adding computer science to her repertoire. She found fascination in the universal presence of applied mathematics, desiring to capture its patterns and apply them practically.

During her time at Yale, Nicole contributed significantly to various research and teaching roles. She assisted in a medical machine-learning study, tutored multiple math courses, interned with prestigious financial institutions like Yale Investments Office and D.E. Shaw Group, and even innovated fee structure comparisons for investment models as part of her senior project. Despite these achievements, her true passion lay in music. Under Professor Elisabeth Parisot's guidance, Nicole honed her piano skills at the Yale School of Music. She actively participated in numerous musical groups, including singing with the Yale Glee Club and Yale Cantorum, performing with peers in senior projects, and directing campus shows.

Lam’s leadership extended further as the music director and head conductor of the Berkeley College Orchestra, witnessing its growth under her tenure. Additionally, during her final year, she served as the assistant conductor of the Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO), conducting successful performances such as the sold-out Halloween show and making her European debut while touring North Macedonia and Greece. These experiences allowed her to embrace roles previously unexplored—conducting and musical direction—that deeply fulfilled her artistically.

Nicole Lam's journey illustrates how diverse interests can coalesce harmoniously. Her academic rigor complemented her musical aspirations, shaping her into a leader who fosters creativity and inspiration among others. As she steps onto the Broadway stage, Lam carries with her not only technical expertise but also a profound commitment to creating environments where individuals thrive, bringing their authentic selves forward through shared passions.
