This image stirred her compassion, leading her to take immediate action. "The picture of them together brought tears to my eyes," she recounted. Initially, only Zorro was taken into custody by local authorities due to his critical condition. However, Fernandez later tracked down Grover, who had been picked up by a passing motorist. Determined to reunite the brothers, she collaborated with David Wise, a veterinary surgeon, to ensure Zorro received the necessary medical care.

Zorro's injuries were severe, affecting three out of his four legs. According to Wise, the extent of his injuries would typically prevent a dog from walking again. Yet, Zorro defied expectations. After several surgeries and intensive rehabilitation at VCA Knowles Central Animal Hospital, Zorro made a miraculous recovery. When he was finally reunited with Grover, Zorro, despite his limitations, managed to crawl towards his brother.
