In a unique fusion of music, dance, and theater, the cultural landscape of ancient Egypt will be vividly brought to life in Kīhei next week. The upcoming performance at ProArts Playhouse features an innovative blend of classical and ambient compositions by local artist James Nevius. This captivating production promises to transport audiences through time and space, offering a serene journey into the world of pharaohs and pyramids. Combining original choreography with evocative poetry and striking visuals, this multi-sensory experience is set to captivate both locals and visitors alike.
In the heart of Kīhei, on Thursday, January 9th at 7:30 PM, the ProArts Playhouse will host a mesmerizing evening that fuses music, dance, and visual art. Local composer James Nevius’s album On the Nile, originally released last year, will take center stage as it transforms from a musical composition into a live performance. Choreographer Randi Lonzaga has crafted nine original dances inspired by Nevius’s work, creating a seamless blend of movement and sound. Accompanied by poetic recitations and video imagery capturing the essence of the Nile River, this performance promises to whisk viewers away on a global and historical adventure.
Nevius’s compositions draw from diverse influences, ranging from minimalist composers like Philip Glass to cinematic scores by Hans Zimmer. His pieces incorporate authentic sounds recorded in Egypt, such as marketplaces near the Great Pyramid, calls to prayer, horse hooves clopping along riverbanks, and the flowing waters of the Nile itself. These elements combine to create an immersive auditory tapestry that transports listeners to another era.
The evening’s performances will feature Randi Lonzaga alongside dancers Lily Werner and Aaron Pardini, all of whom bring their own unique talents to the stage. In addition to the live performance, CDs of On the Nile and other works by Nevius will be available for purchase, allowing attendees to relive the magic long after the curtain falls.
Tickets for this extraordinary event range from $15 to $30 and can be reserved online or by phone.
This production not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt but also highlights the creative synergy between artists from different disciplines. It serves as a reminder of the power of art to bridge time and place, connecting modern audiences with distant civilizations. For those who attend, it offers a rare opportunity to experience history through the lens of contemporary creativity, leaving a lasting impression that transcends the boundaries of time and space.
