A former staff member of renowned rapper Eminem has encountered legal repercussions for allegedly selling unreleased music from the star. Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck revealed the charges on March 19, marking a significant development in safeguarding intellectual property rights within the music industry.

The criminal complaint outlines that federal authorities were alerted by Eminem's studio personnel in Ferndale, Michigan, after discovering unauthorized sales of unreleased tracks online. Following an investigation, the FBI traced multiple buyers who implicated Joseph Strange, formerly employed by Eminem, as the seller. The press statement emphasizes that the music was still under development at the time of its illicit distribution.

Joseph Strange served Eminem from 2007 to 2021. If found guilty of criminal copyright infringement, he faces up to five years in prison and a fine reaching $250,000. Additionally, a conviction for interstate transportation of stolen goods could result in a maximum sentence of ten years.

Julie Beck emphasized the necessity of protecting creators' exclusive rights against theft. Similarly, Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, highlighted the FBI's dedication to preventing illegal exploitation of artists' intellectual property. Cooperation with Mathers Music Studio facilitated swift enforcement of federal laws, ensuring accountability for Joseph Strange's actions.
