F1's Liam Lawson: Unreleased Songs on the Back Burner
2024-12-16
Liam Lawson's life took an unexpected turn in September when he stepped into Daniel Ricciardo's shoes at VCARB during the mid-season. This significant change understandably led to a shift in his priorities, with some of his beloved hobbies taking a backseat. As he humorously admitted to us, "Yeah, I've gotten just a little bit busy recently."
Lawson's Musical Side
This 22-year-old New Zealander harbors a romantic streak and finds solace in strumming and singing, especially acoustic-y ballads. Just before being called up to the team full-time, he spent time in the recording studio. "The guys I play with are my close friends, and we got together the night before to choose the songs we wanted to cover. Then we went into the studio and recorded them," he shared. There are even outtakes from those sessions floating around the Internet.Back in June, he promised that we would soon hear the tracks, but alas, life in Formula 1 got in the way. Even with a decade or more of experience in his hobbies, finding time became a challenge. "When I was younger, around 10 or 11, I wrote my own songs. I think I was quite obsessed with girls even then, so I probably wrote songs about my crush in primary school," Lawson explained. His partner, Hannah St. John, a biomedical science student, helped jog his memory. "Well, when he was 12, he wrote a song titled 'Pain,'" she added. "I must have been going through something. You know how kids make everything seem a thousand times more dramatic than it really is. That was probably one of those times," he continued. He expressed a deep desire to pursue music further but acknowledged that to excel, one needs to invest a lot of time. Even during the off-season, the demands of his day job take precedence.Lawson's Vlogging Journey
Lawson's vlogging career is still in its nascent stage. He started his YouTube channel just a year ago and covered a wide range of topics, from a day at DisneyLand to building a project car (which was later sold for charity) to witnessing a SpaceX flight. He has amassed nearly 91,000 subscribers. However, five months ago, he temporarily hung up his lapel microphone. "Vlogging is something I really enjoy doing, but with anything I do, I want it to be really good. I don't like to do anything half-heartedly. It's the same with music. That's why I never released any of the vlogging content. It was recorded so last minute that, although it came out well, I know we can do a better job," he said. He emphasized, "I don't want to post videos every three weeks on random days and not have them fully put together. I'd like to do it properly. So maybe, when I get a bit more structure in my life, we'll resume vlogging more regularly."Though his life may become more hectic in the near future depending on certain developments, he remains committed to finding a balance between his racing career and his hobbies.Watch my full road-trip interview with Lawson below.
