2024-12-05
In a disturbing incident that has gone viral, a Massachusetts family found themselves at the center of a racist rant while on a United Airlines bus. Professional photographer Pervez Taufiq, whose work has graced the pages of prestigious publications like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, was the one to capture this now-infamous event on his cell phone. He firmly believes that the unidentified woman should be held accountable for her actions.
Desire for Justice and a Strong Message
Taufiq, along with his wife Nicole and their three children, was on a flight from Mexico to California. During the journey, a woman sitting next to their 11-year-old son in business class began yelling at their 4-year-old. Taufiq was quick to respond, stating, "Don't you ever speak to my son that way. You have no right." The woman didn't stop there; she also allegedly called his family "tandoori" and "stinky."His son later informed him that the woman had asked if he was Indian, to which he replied affirmatively. After disembarking and getting on a United bus to head to the airport, the situation escalated. The woman, who is White, made racist comments to Taufiq's family, leading to a heated exchange. Taufiq posted the aftermath on his Instagram page on Nov. 24. In the video, she can be seen giving an obscene gesture as she berates Taufiq, saying, "Your family is from India. You have no respect," and adding, "I'm American" while calling them "crazy."Although Taufiq tried to explain that he and his family are also American, the woman remained defiant. A staff member attempted to intervene, and Taufiq asked for the woman to be removed from the bus. Despite the employee's response that they couldn't remove her, she voluntarily got off the vehicle to speak to workers outside. Another passenger also spoke to the staffers from inside the bus, expressing discomfort due to the woman's foul language and "racist" comments and requesting that she not be allowed back on.Taufiq concludes his video by stating that police on site were looking to arrest the woman and that she had been placed on a no-fly list. He emphasizes the importance of standing up against such behavior, saying, "This is not acceptable and if you see it, stand up, say something, be with the person that's going through this."Nicole, who is also a wedding photographer, shared with WBZ that their family has traveled to 34 countries but had never had to have a conversation about racism with their children until now. She described how the 11-year-old is dealing with the situation in different ways, with each day bringing new questions and perspectives. It's clear that he is still trying to process this entire experience in his own way, and it's a difficult sight to witness.Taufiq also informed NBC News that United Airlines has not yet reached out to his family. When contacted by PEOPLE, United Airlines declined to comment. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of racism and the need for everyone to take a stand against it.
