Farewell to a Musical Haven: The Bittersweet Closure of Hillside Music & Que
2024-10-30
The Hillside Music & Que restaurant, a beloved establishment on U.S. 31 in Vestavia Hills, has closed its doors for the final time. The eatery, which started as The Palm & Pig seafood and barbecue restaurant in July 2023, underwent a rebranding a year later to become Hillside Music & Que. However, the rebranded restaurant was unable to withstand the challenges of the current economic climate, lasting less than four months before its closure.

A Unique Dining Experience Comes to an End

The Rise and Fall of Hillside Music & Que

Hillside Music & Que was the result of a partnership between three individuals, one of whom, Doug Smith, served as the primary chef and manager. However, Smith's departure and subsequent pursuit of a different direction led to the rebranding of the establishment. The remaining partners, Skip Davis and Charles Perry, both of whom held full-time jobs in medical sales and financial advising, attempted to revive the restaurant by bringing on a new executive chef, JP Holland. Sadly, their efforts were not enough to overcome the economic obstacles they faced.

Adapting to Changing Times

In a bid to attract and retain customers, Hillside Music & Que made several changes to its menu and offerings. The restaurant maintained its signature barbecue, ribs, oysters, shrimp po'boys, and frozen drinks, while also introducing new items such as hot dogs, additional burger options, more salads, and new signature cocktails. The owners also expanded the menu to include a variety of sides, including baked beans, potato salad, red beans and rice, collard greens, and hand-cut fries. Additionally, they introduced a weekend brunch service from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

A Beloved Gathering Spot

Despite their efforts, the economic climate proved too challenging for Hillside Music & Que to overcome. Skip Davis, one of the remaining partners, acknowledged the difficulties of running a family-oriented business in the current political and economic environment. He expressed his belief that the future may hold only corporate stores, as the challenges faced by small, independent establishments continue to mount.

A Farewell to a Musical Haven

The closure of Hillside Music & Que was met with sadness by many in the community, as the restaurant had become a hub for live music in the area. Davis noted that a number of musicians came to the establishment on its final day to show their support and bid farewell to the beloved venue. The loss of this unique dining and entertainment destination will be felt by the local community, who had come to appreciate the restaurant's lively atmosphere and commitment to showcasing local musical talent.

Lessons Learned and a Bittersweet Ending

The story of Hillside Music & Que serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by small businesses in the current economic landscape. While the owners' efforts to adapt and evolve the restaurant's offerings were commendable, the harsh realities of the market ultimately proved too much to overcome. As the curtain falls on this chapter, the community can reflect on the memories and experiences shared within the walls of Hillside Music & Que, and look forward to the next chapter in the ever-evolving culinary and entertainment landscape of Vestavia Hills.
