Femme House Celebrates Diversity and Inclusivity at Miami Music Week
2025-04-03

A landmark event unfolded during the vibrant Miami Music Week 2025, where Femme House continued to advocate for inclusivity in the dance music world. Founded by Hermixalot and LP Giobbi in 2018, this nonprofit organization has been dedicated to empowering women, gender-expansive individuals, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ creatives through education, collaboration, and community building. Their efforts culminated in a series of impactful events held throughout the week.

Among these events was the inaugural Femmy Awards, an afternoon celebration hosted at Palm Tree Club on March 27. This gathering honored trailblazers who have shaped the dance music scene, including DJ Minx, DJ Lady D, Crystal Waters, and Barbara Tucker. These pioneers, predominantly Black women, were recognized for their contributions to the genre's foundation and their enduring presence over the decades. The ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also acknowledged allies within the industry, such as HE.SHE.THEY for best record label and Lightning in a Bottle for most diverse festival. British producer TSHA and techno star Sara Landry delivered heartfelt speeches acknowledging their mentors and peers, reinforcing the importance of solidarity among creators.

In addition to the awards, Femme House organized a showcase for LP Giobbi’s Yes Yes Yes label, featuring a performance by DJ Minx that extended into the early hours of the morning. Despite the late night, the founders were back for a brunch followed by a panel discussion with esteemed vocalists DJ Lady D, Crystal Waters, and Kaleena Zanders. During this session, they addressed systemic injustices faced by Black female singers in the dance music industry, emphasizing the need for proper recognition and fair compensation. Panelists discussed strategies like contract scrutiny, legal representation, and assertiveness in negotiations to ensure equitable treatment. Younger voices like Zanders highlighted the necessity of staying engaged in the fight for justice and advocated for listing vocalists as primary artists on digital platforms to maximize earnings.

Through its initiatives, Femme House underscores the value of creating opportunities for underrepresented groups while fostering an environment of mutual respect and support. By celebrating pioneers and providing platforms for dialogue, the organization exemplifies how unity and perseverance can drive meaningful change in any field. Such efforts inspire others to join the movement toward a more inclusive and equitable creative landscape.
