Director James Gunn has unveiled the initial extensive preview of his fresh Superman movie, a reimagining of the DC cinematic universe that features David Corenswet as the lead character. (He also portrays Clark Kent, but keep it under wraps at the Daily Planet.) In a roundtable discussion with IGN shared on December 17th, Gunn provided some insights into how this movie might integrate with future films from the DC realm.

How This Movie Stands on Its Own

The director emphasized that "Everything needs to stand by itself." Gunn doesn't want viewers to feel they need to have seen other DC movies to enjoy this one. However, he also hinted that as the franchise progresses, things might change a bit. "There's seeds being planted," he added, but his main priority is making this movie the best it can be and keeping that focus throughout.

Superman's Release Date

Superman is scheduled to make its debut in the United States on July 11, 2025. This gives fans something to look forward to in the coming years.

The New Trailer

Released on December 19th, 2024, the new trailer offers a tantalizing glimpse into what fans can expect from the first of several planned films aimed at breathing new life into the DC characters. The dramatic cut reintroduces the world of Superman, his friends, his enemies, his romance with Lois Lane, and his loyal companion, Krypto the Superdog. It showcases Superman's origins, from his time on a Kansas farm to his role at the Daily Planet where he meets Lois Lane and sparks a romantic interest. We also get a brief look at Lex Luthor in all his bald glory. It seems that Superman's credibility among the people of Metropolitan City is at an all-time low, as crowds attack him even though they can't physically harm him. This definitely seems to dampen his spirits.New heroes for future films seem to be making their debut in this iteration of Superman's story, including Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern.In his IGN interview, Gunn revealed that although Superman and Lex Luthor are aware of each other, this movie will show their first official confrontation. He also suggested that the relationship between Clark and Lois will be more intense than in typical Superman stories."The relationship between David and Rachel's [characters] on screen is something I don't think we've seen in—I hate to say stuff like this—but I don't think it's something we've ever seen [in] any superhero movie ever," he said. "It's a complex relationship and we really delve into it. There are long scenes dedicated to their relationship and how they interact and what it would be like for a person who is this incredibly intelligent, strong-headed, stubborn, and skeptical journalist to have a relationship with someone who can lift a skyscraper."When asked if Lois knows who Superman is, Gunn played coy. "Well, we'll see," he joked. "She knows who Superman is."

In addition to David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan will star as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor, Pruitt Taylor Vince will be Jonathan Kent, Edi Gathegi will portray Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced will star as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan will be Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion will now be Guy Gardner/Green Lantern. This cast is set to bring the story of Superman to life in exciting ways.
