Genesis Classical Academy Shines in Statewide Music Competitions
2025-04-06

Students from Genesis Classical Academy (GCA) recently showcased their exceptional musical talents during March's Music In Our Schools Month. Participating in various state-level events, they achieved remarkable success, earning numerous Superior ratings and honors. At the ACDA 4-5-6 Honor Choir event on March 29, five GCA students performed alongside peers from across the state. Additionally, GCA ensembles excelled at competitions like the Large Group Choral Contest and Solo/Ensemble Contest, receiving top scores for their performances.

GCA fifth-grader Wyatt Sahr also made headlines by winning first place at the Minnesota Music Teacher’s Association (MMTA) State Piano Contest Finals. These achievements reflect the school's commitment to nurturing young musicians through rigorous training and participation in prestigious events.

Musical Excellence Recognized Across Multiple Platforms

Throughout March, Genesis Classical Academy students demonstrated outstanding musical abilities in several high-profile competitions. At the Large Group Choral Contest held in Lake Crystal on March 3, the GCA 9-12 Choir earned a Superior rating. This recognition was based on evaluations conducted by impartial judges who assessed tone quality, intonation, rhythm, balance, technique, interpretation, and overall performance factors. Similarly, at the Subsection Six Solo/Ensemble Contest on March 10, seven GCA participants received Superior ratings across vocal solos, piano solos, and ensemble performances.

The evaluation process involved detailed scoring criteria designed to ensure fairness and accuracy. Judges used an approved music list provided by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), assessing each piece individually. Scores ranged from zero to forty points, with Superior ratings awarded to those achieving between thirty-five and forty points. Such consistent excellence underscores GCA's dedication to fostering well-rounded musicians capable of excelling in diverse settings.

Young Talent Takes Center Stage at State Choir Events

Five talented GCA students participated in the prestigious American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) 4-5-6 Honor Choir event held on March 29. Performing as part of the Polaris Choir under guest conductor Patti Arntz, these students joined over two hundred others representing schools statewide. Their repertoire included selections such as "A Quilt of Snow" arranged by Patti Arntz and compositions by renowned artists like Jocelyn Hagen and Jim Papoulis.

This opportunity allowed GCA students to collaborate with accomplished musicians while gaining exposure to advanced choral techniques. It also highlighted the institution's emphasis on providing students with enriching experiences that enhance their musical education. Furthermore, Wyatt Sahr's victory at the MMTA State Piano Contest Finals exemplifies individual achievement within this supportive environment, setting a precedent for future successes among aspiring musicians at Genesis Classical Academy.
