Despite a relatively quiet weekend at the international box office, marked by continued runs for major studio releases and staggered debuts for new films, Ne Zha 2 achieved another significant milestone. The animated sequel has now become the fifth-highest-grossing movie worldwide. Its total in China stands at approximately $2.054 billion, with additional earnings from overseas markets pushing its global total over $2.085 billion. Meanwhile, other notable performances include Mickey 17 reaching $90.5 million globally, Captain America: Brave New World adding $6 million internationally, and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy surpassing previous installments' lifetime grosses in the UK.
In addition to these successes, Imax screens contributed significantly to Ne Zha 2's performance, achieving a running global cumulative of $155 million. Other new releases like Black Bag and Novocaine also started their international journeys, with varying degrees of success across different territories.
The animated sequel Ne Zha 2 continues to break records as it ranks fifth among the highest-grossing movies worldwide. With a domestic Chinese total nearing $2.1 billion, projections suggest it may reach even higher before its run concludes. Outside of China, the film is expanding its footprint through upcoming releases in Indonesia, Europe, and Japan.
Imax theaters have played a crucial role in amplifying Ne Zha 2's impact, contributing $155 million globally. Of this amount, nearly all comes from China where audiences embraced the film enthusiastically. In regions such as the UK, Imax accounted for 35% of preview sales during its debut weekend, marking it as the largest local-language opening ever for the format there. This widespread appeal underscores how well-received the film has been both culturally and commercially across diverse demographics.
Beyond Ne Zha 2, several other films showcased strong performances or made notable strides this past weekend. Warner Bros.' Mickey 17 reached a global total of $90.5 million after expanding widely; South Korea led international ticket sales followed closely by the UK, France, Germany, and Mexico. Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World added $6 million from 52 markets in its fifth weekend, bringing its overall global earnings to $388.6 million.
Universal/Working Title’s Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy crossed impressive thresholds too, particularly in the UK where it became Working Title’s second biggest film ever and one of history's top romantic comedies. Expanding further into new territories, Universal launched Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag earning $4.3 million from initial markets including France, UK, and Australia. Similarly, Paramount introduced Novocaine starring Jack Quaid which generated $1.8 million across select regions primarily driven by strong showings in Mexico and Korea. These varied outcomes highlight each title's unique market dynamics while reflecting broader trends within current cinematic offerings globally.
