Golden Globes: Cannes & Int'l Influence in Film, Emmys in TV
2024-12-09
Although the Golden Globes' recordkeeping has been somewhat inconsistent over their 82-year history, Netflix's Emilia Pérez has now made a significant mark. With a whopping 10 nominations in the Musical or Comedy category, she surpasses last year's Barbie and 1972's Cabaret, both with 9 nominations. 1975's Best Motion Picture -Drama nominee Nashville had 11 nominations in total, but many were in acting categories. French director Jacques Audiard's Spanish language production also shines, with multiple acting nominations including a groundbreaking Lead Actress -Drama for trans performer Karla Sofia Gascon and a Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language nomination. Pérez didn't get much recognition in last week's critics awards but has gained momentum with the Globes and swept the European Film Awards.
International Flavor in Voting Body
The international voting body, which has increased to about 300 in recent years after scandals, is evident in today's film nominations. India's All We Imagine As Light got a directing nomination for Payal Kapadia, and France's Coralie Fargeat received nominations in multiple categories for The Substance. This year, two women are in the directors race, which is a significant and somewhat surprising development. The Cannes Film Festival also had a big impact, with its top three film winners and other nominees landing a total of 22 nominations.MUBI's The Substance
The showing of MUBI's The Substance with acting nominations for Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley was unexpected. It landed one more nomination than Wicked, which was overlooked for Jon M. Chu's direction. This is a surprise, but it's expected to gain steam at Thursday's Critics Choice nominations and the Oscars.Other Films and Nominations
The Brutalist with 7 and Conclave with 6 both got key Motion Picture – Drama and Screenplay and Directing nominations. Musical or Comedy juggernauts like Emilia Pérez, Anora, and The Substance are in a highly competitive race. Searchlight scored Best Picture – Drama nominations for Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain and A Complete Unknown, with Timothee Chalamet in the Best Actor -Drama race. Paramount got a sole nomination for the riveting September 5 for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Denzel Washington's The Piano Lesson was overlooked. Warner Bros.' With high wattage stars like Pamela Anderson, Zendaya, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, and Daniel Craig, along with music icons like Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez, it should be a starry night for the Globes.TV Nominations
