2025-01-06
Transitioning from high school to college can be daunting, especially when it involves leaving behind cherished hobbies. Many students face the challenge of balancing their academic goals with personal passions. This narrative explores how one student found a way to integrate her lifelong love for singing into her rigorous journalism studies at San Diego State University (SDSU).

Discover the Power of Pursuing Your Passion Alongside Academic Excellence

Embracing New Beginnings

Two years ago, I stood on the precipice of an uncertain future, ready to embark on a journey that would take me 3,000 miles away from everything familiar. The decision to pursue journalism at SDSU was both exhilarating and terrifying. It meant stepping away from my roots—my family, friends, and most importantly, my passion for music. Singing had been an integral part of my life since childhood. A video from 2007 captures a 3-year-old version of myself dancing around the living room, belting out “I’m Wishing” from Snow White. By the time I graduated high school in 2022, there wasn’t a single month where I wasn’t involved in some form of performance—choir, theater, or dance.Music and theater were not just hobbies; they were my escape, my sanctuary. Yet, as I delved deeper into journalism during my senior year of high school, I realized this could be my true calling. But could I truly abandon the stage? Thankfully, I didn’t have to.

Finding Community Through Performance

Upon arriving at SDSU, I discovered SoundWave, an a cappella group that piqued my interest. Despite having no prior experience in a cappella, I decided to audition during my first week of freshman year. Little did I know that this decision would change my college experience profoundly. While my first semester was marred by difficulties—living in a challenging dorm environment and struggling to make friends—SoundWave became my lifeline. Each rehearsal provided a reprieve from the stress of campus life. The camaraderie within the group offered a sense of belonging that I hadn’t anticipated.By my third year, I’ve grown more comfortable balancing my commitments. SoundWave’s flexible schedule allows me to dedicate time to academics, work, and internships while still nurturing my musical side. As Jacob Opatz, a fourth-year computer science major and SoundWave president, aptly puts it, “Music isn’t just beneficial for the brain; it’s crucial for mental health. It provides a creative outlet and a community that values each member.”

The Benefits of Extracurricular Engagement

Extracurricular activities play a vital role in shaping the college experience. According to a 2020 study by Preventative Medicine, such activities boost optimism and reduce depression and screen time. For many students, including myself, extracurriculars offer a much-needed break from the monotony of daily academic routines. Lexy Sakrekoff, a third-year psychology major and new member of SoundWave, shares similar sentiments. She notes that while joining the group has required sacrifices, like visiting her mom less frequently, the rewards far outweigh the challenges.Engaging in extracurriculars also enhances employability. Employers value well-rounded candidates who demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and creativity—qualities often honed through participation in clubs and organizations. For instance, my involvement in SoundWave has taught me discipline, time management, and collaboration skills that are invaluable in both my academic and professional pursuits.

Achieving Balance Amidst Demands

Balancing academics, extracurriculars, and personal life is no small feat. Rehearsals, which occur twice a week, require additional daily practice. During competition season, rehearsals extend to three hours. These demands can be overwhelming, especially when combined with coursework and other responsibilities. However, finding harmony between these aspects has been crucial. There have been late nights spent completing homework after rehearsals and adjustments to work schedules due to performances. Yet, SoundWave remains a vital outlet rather than an obligation. It has consistently provided a space where I can express myself creatively and connect with others who share my passion. In conclusion, integrating personal passions into academic life enriches the overall college experience. It fosters growth, builds resilience, and creates lasting connections. For students like myself, finding this balance is not only possible but essential.
