The HEAVYS Headphones: A Review for Heavy Music Fans
2024-12-11
You might recall a few years ago when sound engineering maestro Axel Grell, renowned for his work on Sennheiser and more, conceptualized a pair of headphones specifically tailored for heavy music enthusiasts. Initially, many were skeptical, questioning if it was the real deal or just a hoax. But soon after, HEAVYS released their prototype pairs to early adopter investors, and the reviews started pouring in from audiophiles.

Experience #1: The Flight
My odyssey with HEAVYS began during a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne. Spanning a couple of hours, it provided the perfect opportunity to immerse myself in some heavy deathcore records like Lorna Shore's "Pain Remains" and Chelsea Grin's "Suffer in Heaven". I put on the headphones, adjusted them for a perfect fit, and was immediately struck by the sheer clarity. Moving from a 2019 pair of Sennheiser HD.50's, which was half a decade behind in technology, I was amazed by the crisp instrumentation that filled my ears.As I listened to Lorna Shore's "Welcome Back, O' Sleeping Dreamer", the pilot's navigation faded into the background. During the rest of the album, I paid particular attention to the "Pain Remains" trio. I expected a bassy experience, but the HEAVYS volume surprised me. The drivers worked hard, delivering every production element with precision. I noticed tones and subtleties that I had never captured before. With Chelsea Grin's "Yhorm the Giant" and Hell Blocker activated, any remnants of human life disappeared. I was blown away by how I could listen to deathcore without realizing I was on a flight. Vocalist Tom Barber's minute intonations added to the raw and heavy experience.Experience #2: Working at Home
As a new dad with a busy life, working from home as an Organizational Psychologist and handling Co-Editor and Deathcore Connoisseur duties, I needed to eliminate distractions. I started my day with Void of Vision's "What I'll Leave Behind" while my 1-year-old was playing. The headphones truly delivered an immersive experience. Vocalist Jack Bergin seemed to be screaming in the same room. The guitars were grooving, and the drums were pounding.Next, I listened to Knocked Loose's "You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To". This band's chaos and fusion of genres were captured perfectly by the HEAVYS. Every instrument had its role, and I could focus on different elements as I pleased.Experience #3: Lifting Weights
I had read some reviews about using HEAVYS at the gym and was hesitant due to concerns about bulkiness and sweat resistance. But I decided to give it a try. At the gym with Top 40 music blaring, I activated Hell Blocker and put on the headphones. I was excited to listen to Boundaries' "Death Is Little More". During my warm-up, I adjusted the headphones carefully. As I progressed to bench-pressing, the headphones stayed in place. Tracks like "Darkness Shared" played at lossless quality, and I felt like I was tearing up a circle pit.Firmware Update & HEAVYS App
The HEAVYS Facebook Group is a hub for users to discuss the product. Many complained about volume and bass. In late November 2024, HEAVYS launched a new app with firmware updates and an in-built equalizer. This was a game-changer. I downloaded the app, turned up the bass, and listened to Currents' "The Death We Seek". The combination of firmware, equalizer, and Hell Blocker was magical. It enhanced the at-home experience, making me feel like I was at a show. The best part is that I can adjust the equalizer based on different albums and genres.HEAVYS is partnering with dozens of bands to create custom branded shells, adding to their passion for heavy music.I wholeheartedly recommend HEAVYS as your primary heavy music headphones. They are about to take Australia by storm, and Wall of Sound is proud to be a part of the journey. At our BIGSOUND Heavy Music Industry Mixer, we held a competition, and the local metalheads' expectations were met.
