Hulu and 20th Television Unveil New Series Based on Ron Stallworth's Memoir
2025-02-26

A groundbreaking television series is in the making, set to captivate audiences with its unique narrative. Hulu and 20th Television are currently developing a show titled Hip Hop Cop, which draws inspiration from Ron Stallworth’s memoir The Gangs of Zion. This project represents a significant milestone for Stallworth, whose previous work, Black Klansman: Race, Hate, and the Undercover Investigation of a Lifetime, garnered widespread acclaim. The new series will delve into Stallworth's life during the vibrant 1990s rap and hip-hop era, highlighting his remarkable undercover operations within the Salt Lake City Police Department. The collaboration promises to bring a fresh perspective on Stallworth’s experiences, offering viewers an insightful journey through a pivotal period in American history.

Joining forces to bring this compelling story to life are some of the industry's most talented creators. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, through G-Unit Film & Television, and Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment Group are leading the executive production. Additionally, multiple award-winning writers and directors, Kevin Willmott and Anthony Hemingway, have been tapped to craft the series. Notably, Willmott and Stallworth previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed film BlacKkKlansman, where Willmott earned an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. While Hip Hop Cop is not a direct sequel to BlacKkKlansman, it extends Stallworth’s narrative, providing a deeper exploration of his impactful career. Originally conceptualized as a film by Hyde Park in 2023, the project has now evolved into a television series that promises to engage and enlighten audiences.

This ambitious project underscores the importance of storytelling that reflects diverse perspectives and historical events. By shedding light on Stallworth’s courageous efforts and the cultural significance of the 1990s hip-hop scene, Hip Hop Cop aims to inspire viewers with tales of resilience and integrity. It serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in standing up for justice and the transformative power of art and music in shaping society. Through engaging narratives and dynamic characters, the series hopes to foster greater understanding and appreciation for the complexities of our shared history.
