I Tried Bahamas Cruises on 3 Lines: One I'd Never Choose Again
2024-12-18
I have always been an avid cruiser, whether it's a port-intensive voyage to Greece or a short getaway to the Bahamas. In the past year, I embarked on cruises to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Carnival ships. Each line has its own unique charm and offerings.
Uncover the Secrets of Bahamas Cruises
Carnival: Fun and Lively with a Few Hiccups
Carnival Cruise Line is renowned for its fun and lively atmosphere, with a plethora of activities tailored for partygoers and families. I started the year with a 4-night cruise on Carnival Conquest. The interior stateroom for two was $817.30, approximately $102 per person per night. The 185-square-foot cabin was spacious, but the clingy shower curtain and noise from passersby were a drawback. However, we had a great location on Deck 7, just two decks above the Fun Shops and two below the lido deck. The price was reasonable, but tendering to Half Moon Cay was a hassle compared to the dock at Perfect Day at CocoCay. The island is beautiful, but the tendering process was disorganized, resulting in longer waits. Additionally, during my 5-night cruise on Carnival Elation, the same issue occurred. Another gripe was that Carnival doesn't provide complimentary umbrellas at Half Moon Cay. If you want to shield yourself from the sun, you have to pay an extra $35. Moreover, Carnival's drink packages don't work ashore. Overall, it seemed like Carnival was trying to nickel and dime guests.During my sailing, the 22-year-old Carnival Conquest faced a few power issues. Pizza Pirate and Carnival Deli's power went out on the second night, and the only late-night snack available was cold sandwiches. However, I enjoyed most of my meals, especially at The Point Steakhouse. If you don't want to splurge on specialty dining, the food quality in the Main Dining Room is still good. There are also popular spots like Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina onboard. The dining experience on Carnival Elation was disappointing. The service and food quality in the Main Dining Room were a far cry from what I experienced on Conquest. It seemed like all the minor issues on Conquest worsened on Elation, leaving me with the impression that Carnival had room for improvement. That said, Carnival is a great choice for cruisers who love high-energy activities. The pool deck is lively with music and games throughout the day, and the nightlife is vibrant. But for those seeking a quieter, more relaxed experience, the party-centric atmosphere can be overwhelming.Royal Caribbean: Non-stop Entertainment on Allure of the Seas
Oasis Class ships have been my favorites for a decade. I recently took a 4-night cruise on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas. Having found a great last-minute deal, my dad and I paid just $834.36 for our cruise. Our guaranteed interior cabin was at the front of the ship, which was a bit of a hike to the venues in the aft like the Main Dining Room and AquaTheater. But everything else about the stateroom was perfect for our short getaway. It was cozy and well-appointed, with plenty of storage space.Unlike my Bahamas cruises with Carnival, this cruise called at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island. Compared to Half Moon Cay, CocoCay offers a more diverse experience with attractions like the Thrill Waterpark, the adults-only Hideaway Beach, and the upscale Coco Beach Club.Aside from the ports of call, I enjoyed the entertainment on Allure of the Seas more. Watching the high-diving AquaTheater shows and listening to live music in the pub was an unforgettable experience. There were more partygoers onboard compared to longer Royal Caribbean cruises, but it wasn't as overwhelming as on Carnival cruises. Moreover, the food was exceptional. My dad and I dined at two specialty restaurants, which were new experiences for us. Meat lovers shouldn't miss Samba, the Brazilian steakhouse with premium cuts of meat. The highlight was the Chef's Table, a must-visit for foodies.Overall, I found my 4-night cruise on Allure of the Seas to be the perfect balance between a lively party atmosphere and quiet spaces to unwind and relax. It's a great option for those who want to experience the excitement of an Oasis Class ship without committing to a lengthy vacation. It's also more affordable.Celebrity: Luxurious and Comfortable with Its Own Charm
Like Allure of the Seas, my 5-night cruise on Celebrity Reflection visited Perfect Day at CocoCay. It was the first sailing of Reflection to Royal's private island. Although Reflection is not as new or flashy as Celebrity Ascent, it has its own unique charm and a luxurious, comfortable feel. I found it to be a great compromise for those who want to visit CocoCay without sailing on a family-friendly Royal Caribbean ship. Celebrity's upscale vessels tend to appeal more to an older crowd.I enjoyed everything from the high-energy game shows to the dining. However, it was more expensive compared to my Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruises. Our inside cabin cost $1,997.74, including a Basic Drink Package and Wi-Fi. But because the price was more inclusive, it felt like we were getting more value for our money in certain areas. I loved not having to constantly think about whether to get another drink, and the internet worked well for staying in touch with friends and family. The cabin was incredibly spacious. My fiancée and I had no trouble unpacking and had plenty of space to store our belongings. The only disappointment was the lack of power outlets in the stateroom. We also enjoyed the dining experience, with our specialty meals at Tuscan Grill and The Porch standing out. Most of our dishes in the Main Dining Room were delicious, especially the Barolo braised short ribs, apple tart tatin, and spinach & ricotta ravioli.Families with younger children may not like Celebrity's laid-back environment, but it was the ideal ship for couples or those seeking a more tranquil cruise experience. There were still plenty of activities for those who wanted to get their adrenaline pumping, like silent discos and fun game shows.Comparing the Three Cruise Lines
Although each cruise had its pros and cons, I thought the sailings on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas and Celebrity Reflection better met my vacation expectations. Both offered lively experiences and opportunities to relax and enjoy expertly crafted cocktails. The Bahamas cruises on Carnival, on the other hand, fell short. The overall energy was more focused on drinking, while the sailings with Royal and Celebrity were more well-rounded, providing great dining and entertainment. In conclusion, each cruise line has its own unique appeal, and it depends on your personal preferences and vacation goals. Whether you prefer a fun and lively atmosphere like Carnival, non-stop entertainment like Royal Caribbean, or a luxurious and comfortable experience like Celebrity, there is a cruise line out there for you.
