The annual Chess & Community Conference continues to evolve, reaching new heights in its twelfth edition. Set for Saturday, Mar. 29, the event introduces a dynamic theme—"Future Forward: Game Changers"—featuring renowned personalities as keynote speakers. Participants in both chess and robotics tournaments have the opportunity to vie for prizes up to $1,000. Hosted at the Classic Center in downtown Athens, the free program invites the public to engage from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with optional reservations available online. This year's conference highlights actor Khary Payton and entrepreneur Zach McLeroy, each bringing unique perspectives on leadership and innovation.
At the heart of this year’s conference lies an exploration of how individuals can influence their communities through creativity and entrepreneurship. Actor Khary Payton, whose career spans iconic roles such as King Ezekiel on "The Walking Dead," shares insights shaped by his upbringing in Athens. His journey from Clarke Central High School student to celebrated performer underscores the transformative power of education and community engagement. Meanwhile, Zach McLeroy, co-founder of Zaxby’s, illustrates how vision and collaboration can lead to national success. Despite managing over 900 locations, McLeroy remains committed to local causes via the McLeroy Family Foundation, which funds initiatives that empower others.
The conference also serves as a platform for Chess & Community, a nonprofit organization founded by University of Georgia instructor Lemuel “Life” LaRoche. Established in 2012 as an extension of Classic City Knights, the group leverages activities like chess, robotics, STEM, and debate to cultivate critical thinking among young people. Through these programs, participants gain valuable skills necessary for becoming tomorrow’s leaders. By combining competitive tournaments with thought-provoking discussions, the conference aims to inspire attendees to think boldly about the future.
As the day unfolds, participants will not only enjoy engaging competitions but also absorb wisdom from two trailblazers who embody the spirit of change. Their stories highlight the importance of perseverance, innovation, and giving back—a message that resonates deeply within the Athens community. Ultimately, the 2025 Chess & Community Conference offers more than just entertainment; it provides a blueprint for nurturing the next generation of leaders.
