Is Die Hard Truly a Christmas Movie?
2024-12-19
Critics have long regarded Die Hard as a benchmark that other films of its genre aspire to reach. Starring the iconic Bruce Willis, the question remains: should this classic also be classified as a Christmas movie? A few years ago, the answer would have been a definite no.
Die Hard Christmas Decorations - A Husband's Perspective
My husband Michael firmly believes that John McClane is on par with Rudolph and Buddy the Elf as a Christmas character. Everyone in our circle is aware of his deep affection for this movie. A couple of years ago, his friend Pablo presented him with a Christmas countdown calendar in the shape of Nakatomi Plaza. *Spoiler Alert* As you move Hans Gruber down the 25 floors, by the time he reaches the bottom, it's Christmas Day! As you can see, even our elf Kirby is a supporter of Die Hard as a Christmas movie.I crafted this ornament for our tree that resembles John McClane crawling through the air vents. Why 'Die Hard' is Definitely a Christmas Movie - Point 1
The story takes place during Christmas time. John McClane travels to California to be with his family during the holidays and begins by attending his wife's work Christmas party, which happens to be on Christmas Eve. This might seem a bit odd. Do these people not have children they should be with at home? Nevertheless, does the fact that the movie is set on Christmas Eve automatically make it a Christmas movie? Michael thinks so!Why 'Die Hard' is Definitely a Christmas Movie - Point 2
As evident from the list, there is a significant amount of Christmas music incorporated throughout the story. From Run DMC playing on the limo radio to carols mingling with the intense background score during the action. Characters even whistle or hum Christmas songs from time to time. Why 'Die Hard' is Definitely a Christmas Movie - Point 3
There are numerous random references to the holidays, with lines such as "It's Christmas Theo, it's the time for miracles." There are also mentions of not snooping for presents, Santa, and Ebenezer Scrooge. Why 'Die Hard' is Definitely a Christmas Movie - Point 4
Of course, the building and Christmas party are adorned with decorations including trees, garland, poinsettias, and lights, all setting the holiday mood. Why 'Die Hard' is Definitely a Christmas Movie - Point 5
The final point I'd like to share is one that Michael didn't include on his list. As I watched John McClane endure numerous hardships, I realized that if the holidays are about giving and doing for others, this theme is clearly demonstrated in the storyline. McClane is shot at, survives countless fights, his bare feet are cut and bleeding from broken glass, and he takes out the bad guys one by one. Not all innocent hostages are saved, but John puts himself in harm's way to save his wife and her colleagues. This is a true example of the spirit of the season. So, I am now convinced. My husband is right. Although Die Hard doesn't have the same pure and warm atmosphere as 'It's a Wonderful Life' or 'A Christmas Story', that might not be necessary. If it can bring my husband into the Christmas spirit, then it's a definite yes! Do you think Die Hard is a Christmas movie? Share your thoughts in our poll below!
