John Marshall HS Orchestras Prepare for Annual Monarch Tidings
2024-12-12
John Marshall High School is set to come together and spread holiday cheer tonight with their seventh annual Monarch Tidings Christmas concert. This one-day-only event will take place at the JMHS Center for Performing Arts in Glen Dale at 6 p.m. and will feature a wonderful selection of music from various ensembles within the JMHS Music Department.

Uniting Musicians for a Holiday Spectacular

Ensemble Performances

The hour-long show will showcase a diverse range of ensembles, including the Concert Band, Steel Band, Concert Choir, Monarch Choir, Women’s Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra. These talented groups will play a variety of festive tunes such as "There Is a Santa Claus" along with beloved classics like "The Grinch" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Students have been preparing and polishing these holiday selections over the last several weeks. On Wednesday, they came together on the stage for the first time to practice their pieces as one.

Band director Tracey Filben estimates that around 200 to 250 students will participate in the concert, with broadcasting students like Morgan Carlin and Ash Roth serving as hosts. Filben emphasizes the collaborative nature of the concert, stating that it's the first day they'll perform with the mixed ensembles. Traditionally, there are between 12 to 15 pieces featured, giving each group a chance to showcase their talent.

The Addition of the Women's Ensemble

A new addition to this year's concert is the Women’s Ensemble, composed of female sopranos and altos from the Select Choir and Concert Choir. Choir director Dave Scherrick saw the opportunity to create this ensemble as there are usually more girls than boys in the program. The Women’s Ensemble will perform a medley of Christmas carols called "Swinging Christmas," bridging the gap between the Select Choir and Concert Choir and allowing the ladies to sing in a different setting.

This ensemble brings a unique flavor to the concert, adding another layer of musical enjoyment for the audience. It showcases the diverse talents within the JMHS choir program.

Behind-the-Scenes Work by Broadcasting Students

In addition to the students on stage playing the holiday selections, broadcasting students will be working hard behind the scenes. JMHS broadcasting technology teacher Carly McElhaney explains that the students will be running cameras and ensuring they capture the production in the best way possible. With all of their productions, including this one, it's truly the students who make it happen.

McElhaney views herself as a manager overseeing the students as they take on the responsibility of capturing the concert. Their efforts contribute to making the event a memorable one.

The production will be posted on the WJMH Media YouTube page on Tuesday. The concert is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased at the door. Those with a personalized Marshall County Schools Activity Pass will get free admission. Adult admission is $10, student admission is $5, and children age 5 and younger get in for free.
